Where's the best place to get a good 7M block to build?

I read a thread IJ posted in once and he said he got 3-4 JDM 7M's and rejected all of them for one reason or another... this has me worried :)

Can you still get a brand new block from toyota? Is it worth it? What do you look for anyways in a "perfect 7M block" ?

My plans for it is to get forged everything + new HPF 272 cams, complete head kit, oversized valves, etc.

Thanks!

i cringe at eating the cost of a new block almost as much as I cringe at the things that could be wrong with a used one!

I was under the impression that a used block would be betetr than brand new, simply because it's been through the heat expansions and what not, letting the metal settle. I thought a fresh block was just that; fresh, and would solidify more with use, but that an old block is stronger.

A used block that isn't fubar is a better choice, from a point of view. The new one still has an overbore or two in it, the used might only have one.

You can come by the shop in Pomona and pick one up :icon_wink I have a good core for rebuild or I can get you a jdm longblock but it will not be a complete engine, just head and block.

LMAO @ some of the posts here :)!

Yes as noted Green blocks do move around a bit so a good condition seasoned block is a better base!

Having said that good luck finding one!

Things I found were cracks in the deck between the Steam holes and the headbolt holes, Most had been bored so were rejected as I wanted 1st OS at max, If they'd been sitting most had quite deep pitting in the bores so would be sketchy even at 2nd OS.

Later blocks had quite a lot of core shift in the castings

New blocks are still available but as noted are running out, my new block is now seasoned so I'll have it line honed and give it a light rub with the Lapping plate and Diamond paste after it's been bored and honed with a torque plate!
