Are you talking about the circled areas?

As long as the wires can't touch each other or ground on anything it shouldn't make a difference but you need to insulate them.

Yes, the circled areas.

As far as re-insulating, should electrical tape be used? or new wires?
How should I go about doing that?

Thanks,
Sam

They're just casting marks, You could tape it or use some heat shrink tubing Sam.

Replacing it with some decent Tefzal wire and a Deutsch connector would be the best option this way it's never going to be an issue again.

Ian, you should get rid of "Grumpy Old Man" under your user name, replace it with "Helpful Old Man" haha
I wish there were more guys like you on this forum.

If I replaced the existing wires with some Tefzal wire and a Deutsch connector, is that going to be using the same plug as original? Any more info on this? Do you know of any threads regarding this?

Thanks,
Sam

"Grumpy Helpful Old Man" is just too long ;)

Nope the Deutsch connector replaces the stock failure prone one totally and is much more heat resistant has better pins and should last the cars life time.

I have literally $100's of $ worth of these in my car, they come in many different pin counts.

Ian,

how did you know which head was newer/older in the pictures that Sam provided. Was it just off Casting number? Reason I ask is my 92's head has the casting number 8, and I have been TOLD its the original head but cannot really verify that. I do know my car has the correct, 90-92 block with the extra ridges in it.

Oh and with regard to the cam journals, mine look identical to yours. I think I have seen many cars journals looking that way, not really sure why they all wear like that though..
