I'm an idiot when it comes to the A/C system, this is my first time ever working on it, from what I can tell the fitting thats on the compressor has been converted to R134a because it doesnt have the R12 valve stem:

There is also another fitting near the condenser, I converted it myself, don't know if it was necessary or not:

Where do I fill the oil and refrigerant(freon)???

Low Side " blue cap" with car running and ac on, make sure you have a gauge on your can, pressure should be between 35-45 on a cool day, 45-60 on a hot day.

while we on that topic, since A/C won't work if there is no freon/r134 , how do you make sure the pump is on /engaged before filling? will it automatically come on when there is enough r134 pumped in to the system? I always wondered about that.

You should hear the compressor kick on while filling it.

I tried filling oil in the compressor side (Low) but I don't think any went in, i read the directions and had the a/c to the max and I have the bottle upside down while filling. How long is it suppose to take? I tried filling it for 2 minutes then shook the bottle and noticed all of it or most of it was still in can. Am I doing something wrong or is the stem broken?

Sounds like You have AC problems. I do too right now.

You want to check the fuses - make sure the cig lighter works, and there's one located on the american passenger side kick panel. Putting a can on the low side and it won't kick on doesn't sound like 1-2-3 flash and you're done.

If the compressor won't kick on, it's probabally out of refrigerant. What you need to do it take a jumper wire from your battery and probe the positive side of the clutch connector from behind with a sewing needle or a t pin. It should turn on. Now you can start filling.
If you can help it, try not to hold the can upside down too much because at that point you really only want gas going in. If you hold it upside down for too long it could damage the copressor, although that's not too likely. Try to stick it out, it can take a WHILE.

so much misinformation.....

First off if anything should be left to the pros, its A/C work.

Some other points:

If you attach a can of freon to the high side port of the compressor, and then run the engine/compressor, you could blow the can apart in your hand and cause serious injury.

You should only charge through the low side, with the compressor running.

If you dont know what is in your system or dont know if it has been converted, you should not be guessing. You need to have the refrigerant identified and then charged with the proper one.

If the system is empty, it has a leak. You need to have the leak fixed first and then vacuumed and charged. Or the freon will just leak out again which is bad for the environment and your wallet.

If the system is just low, due to a slow leak, the proper amount to charge is difficult to determine and really should be fully recovered and then recharged to spec.

The low side pressure should not change based on outside temp. The high side will change based on outside temperature and should be a little over double ambient temp. Low side should be lower, around 20 to 30 psi at 1500 RPM for R12. For 134 it will be a little higher.

Oil needs to go in FIRST, and as the system should be sucked down with a vaccuum pump, the oil will flow in on it's own.

DO NOT TURN CANS UPSIDE DOWN, FLUIDS CANNOT BE COMPRESSED AND WILL DESTROY THE COMPRESSOR.

Do your homework and search on these forums HARD to know what you're doing. Being cheap will only bite you in the ass later when your compressor locks up and throws shrapnel through the A/C system...

Some of you members sometimes crack me up. Why do you think the OP made this post? Definitley to ask a question for something he did not know about.

I did the same as well. Thanks for the warnings and answers.
