I am new to Supra's and I am rebuilding an '87 Turbo. When I bought it I was told that it had a rod knock, it was partially disassembled, so I have no idea if it really does. I was thinking if all that was wrong was a bad rod bearing, I would pull the engine, remove the pan, check the crankshaft and bearings, hoping to replace the bearings, and most have the crank turned. However, before doing that I figured I would check the comp.(cold) to see what the condition of the top end was in, the results not good. #1 cyl. was the best at 145psi, but then others fall off from, there 90, 105, 95, 115, 100(2-6), the plugs from #3 & #6 and comp tester were covered in thick oil when removed from the cyls. So with the cheap way gone and needing a full rebuild, I am looking for a one stop supplier of oem quality rebuild kits. I have found some in the area of $1k, but that seems a bit pricey. In the 4x4 world we have specialty engine supply shops that sell complete master rebuild kits for under $400 that meet/exceed oem quality, are there such suppliers in the Supra arena, or is everything as pricey as the cars once were.

I know I could spend $1000's on all the high end parts for building 550+ hp, but I am only looking to hit the mid 400's, and from what I have read here, oem parts are good for that amount and more, so I am looking for the basic rebuild kits, along with a metal HG and ARP studs.

heres a little list of what i was going to use for a 'street' rebuild...
titan = titanmotorsports.com
dino = partsdinosaur.com
auto = autozone.com

main bearing, rod bearing, thrust washer, arp head studs, titan 1.2mm MHG (metal head gasket. all from titanmotorsports.

gasket kit, ring set, t-belt tensioner, timing belt, all from parts dinosaur

then a waterpump, 'cardon' brand only though.

machine work break down.

hot tank - 60
surface block - 80
grind crank - 90
balance assembly - 250
valve job - 450
surface head -
hone & bore - 100 (bore if needed, if not, then cheaper)

so to do the rebuild right would be in the area of about 2k... only reason for the MHG and ARP head studs is because of how lame getting BHG's are... the balancing is optinal... but i think it pays off.

and here are the semi-totals and the end total for what i listed for parts

titan - 288.49 + shipping (assuming my prices didnt change)
dino - 189.70 + shipping (assuming " ")
autozone is like $40... lol
machine work is - 1090... probably less because if you just get it honed, it wont be $100...

end total for me was - 1608.18 + shipping and tax...

i really doubt the OP needs a stroker kit... i would serisouly talk to titan, or suprarich (hes a titan dealer) and work something out with him, im sure he could hook you up.

and that place fastazz, there prices arent exactly awesome... he could easily piece together the same kit for less.

Thanks for the replies, i will shoot suprarich an email and see what he can do.

I am still deciding on what my options are, trying to find a good/used one for cheap(not likely) to run in the meantime to get an idea of what I want to do, or depending on what basic rebuild costs. I have come across kits for $1k, but I can get a used/rebuilt engine for that through a buddy, and have found a block w/heads(locally) to check out.

I figured the Supra was going to be an expensive hobby after trying to find the right rims, for the car. This isn't meant to be an insult, but you car guys seem to think your rims are worth their weight in gold.:aigo: Coming from the 4x4 world where a slightly used set of alloy rims go for about $100, and tire/rim combos $3-400, I was surprised at how much people expected to get for used rims, especially in the size I was looking for. I know people spend a lot on them new, and we do as well in the 4x4, but used we really can't expect to get more than than 25% of what you paid for a set for a set(normally less than $500), regardless of how much we paid for them or how new they are. Fortunately I did find a set of offset(8" front and 9" rears) 5-spoke 18" SSR's(I think it is a good brand) w/good BFG's for $500. A little more than I figured on spending but they are the style I was after, and really make the car look more aggressive and less sedate than the stock rims.

I guess it never fails, while I was considering building a Supra there were turbo engines and car parts a plenty, now that I have one, I can't find a used private sale engine within 250 miles.

it doesnt help that your in grass valley... somebody in sac might be able to help you out.

and $500 for those rims sound like a great deal. i know a bunch of people with SSR's...

4x4 rims are so cheap, because they are cheap. LOL...

and be careful about getting a 'rebulit' engine from anybody unless they either give you a warranty, or have pics to prove whats been done.

I posted on sac craigslist and have a response for a block w/head, The engine is second hand and the current owner was told that the car it was parted from had an electrical issue. I haven't heard back from last email as to my other Q's.

I think I am going to pass on the one that is 230 milers away, no way to check comp(no t-belt), no previous comp numbers, and was two engines put together(1 had knock and one had bad valves).

None of the local yards or Rising Sun Engines had a good short block, so I think I will just rebuild the one I have. I should have a better idea of what I am dealing with after pulling the engine and tearing it down this week.

We have expensive rims in the 4x4 hobby as well($300/rim, and $365/tire), but resale is still under $700 with 90% tread left for a set of 4. I just figured that since there are far more cars out there than trucks there should be more available at cheaper prices. I guess demand in the car arena is just higher, i.e, more cars can fit a 18" lo profile wheel/tire than trucks can fit 37" tire.:biglaugh:
