Actually, Mike Valentine co-founded Cincinnati Microwave, Inc. CMI produced a line of escort radar detectors.
Eventually Escort Radar was formed into it's own company and Mike Valentine was bought out. This was a long time ago, so obviously a fair amount of innovation has gone on since then. The bottom line is that Mike Valentine has always overseen the production of top-end, high-performance radar detectors - including, at one time, the escort passport.

As far as a recommendation - There are quite a few good units out there, but the Escort and V1 have almost always tested to be the best (in most cases SIGNIFICANTLY better than the competition).
You can't go wrong with either one. My preference is the V1 because of some of the optional features, ease of update, ease of use, and better performance in my own testing (I drove around for about a month with both of these units - they are remarkably consistent, but the differences I observed slightly favored the v1). I found the display more intuitive on the v1 as well (though not quite as pretty:greddy::icon_bigg).
