What to do with this rust? Do I have options?

The question is "how much is your time worth" ? Anything is fixable but is it
worth it? You could go to a junk yard find a Supra shell and cut out the sections you need and weld them in but again is it worth it?

Yes but at what cost?

If you don't have the tools/experience/skills/time it's just an exercise in frustration and futility as rust never sleeps and after you pour many hours into the car it'll still be rusting away under all of his hard work.

Better to find a reasonable shell and do a swap if it's not a rare or exotic car.

i say fuck it and build yourself a custom tube frame/chassis where you then bolt up the stock suspension (save cost and fabrication) then drop in the engine. something like a nascar car without the body on and all the high-impact braces. that's a turbo car right? i think you got your money's worth in the engine/drivetrain alone...

on the serious side though...could you use the 7mgte in a tube-frame chassis like the caterham-7 series?

rust scares me, i'd be tempted to look at alternative uses for what IS good and problem-free. swap it out. have you looked for a donor body? they're out there...and there would be no cutting or rust worries!

Ric- holy SHIT! that's an awesome car. crazyass...but awesome.

i had an idea of sticking my car with everything stripped in a pool, mixed with baking soda for a 2:1 water - baking soda mix. then positive the chassis and negative the water. In other words, a big electrolysis machine. i wonder if cars could survive like that?
But anyway, fix it with a fuel cell+custom sheet metal work.

That would probably be thousands of dollars for all that baking soda!
Would be a cool thing to see though :biglaugh:

That is exactly the point i was getting at with my previous post...

haha, awesome idea! but i'd like to see it get eaten alive as a whole car.

anybody see that car they sealed underground for 50 years? the thing turned to shit!! sadly the "bombproof" underground case they put it in to advertise its durability was not waterproof! lol....:biglaugh: :biglaugh:

find a clean MKII? backhalf the car (some of the work is done for you) remove it all and put in a fuel cell over some nice new sheet?

LOL.

i dont mean to dishearten you but i think you would have more fun doing a non-rust related project. the mk2 idea sounds sweet...and in fact its what i'd look into. any modifications required for that or is the 7m a drop in?

lightweight body and possibly a high HP engine...what's more to want? (oh and did anyone mention cheap? they're older than mkIII's so prices tend to be lower....

Mine wasn't a joke sorry :(

I resurrected a rusty car once....... NEVER AGAIN NEVER!

IJ why never again? What did the project cost you? Did you do it all yourself?

I ask because my car is rusted to hell as well. But there's too much sentimental value for me to scrap it. I'm willing to take the $$$ hit to restore it but I'm just curious why you said never again?

well i guess i will add my .02 in here. i see this crap almost every day at the body shop i work at(mainly cuz we restore classic cars alot). my opinion would be to cut out enough of the original metal to remove any rust left, then tack weld in some sheet metal and then smooth up with some rage gold lightweight body filler( in the pink can can't miss it) then prime the spots with some good epoxy primer then repaint the area when your ready. and it will not come back... and on a side note i would kill to buy a supra in that shape for 300 bux i say go for it. its a supra its worth saving if you ask me..... and if you decide to trash it call me up or catch me on here and i would love to take it. good luck let us know how it turns out!

If it was me, i would have never ever touched that car. Even for 100 dollars.

Did you not check it when you bought it?

do you even KNOW how much a 7mgte engine costs?

rethink your post.

Sorry for "misleading"(?) you but its a 86.5 like you have. ....so no gte here. I still think its a fine car for $300.

Anyways, I like godspeeds response and that was what i was planning on doing. Just wanted to get some more opinions before I dig into it.
