well, i just had a guy ask me if i wanted to trade cars. i have a 90, with the white package and targa top. the car is VERY clean, and just needs some tlc and an engine rebuild. also, it's a manual swap and has about 116k on it. i haven't seen the other car yet, but here's some details...... it's an 87, with a built motor that has about 400horse.? it has 550's, lex afm and other supporting mods. it has tokico's and some other nice bits. i'm going to look at it tonight, but i'm not sure what to expect...
my dilemma is, i have an engine lined up for my car, and i already have 550's, lex afm, walbro 255, hard i/c pipes, and a bullseye power turbo all ready to go on. my car has all new suspension, brakes, calipers, braided lines, bic ddp, and ZERO rust underneath. i just don't know if i want to give up on my car just yet. i'm basically looking for some thoughts.
thanks.............
here's a quick pic of my car....

Do you want to take on someone else's project not knowing everything, or would you rather know everything about your own. Weigh out parts and time you have now and what it'll take to do the same to the other

that's what i was thinking. i know what this car needs. there's also the fact that i only paid $600 for it. :). i planned on building it and restoring it to like new condition, just faster and better. lol

thanks. it really is clean. there is literally NO rust on it anywhere. it was painted once, and looks good from 10 feet. lol. i will probably keep it. it's as clean as any i've ever seen. just a few dings and what not.

I was thinking along similar lines here. Why would he want to trade up unless he knows something that he's not telling you?

I also support this. Keep yours, especially since you have parts just waiting. I would ask him and see what his reasoning behind trading is, just out of curiosity.

Wow, I was thinking of the same exact quote. Then I read yours.

If you're really interested in trading with him meet him at performance shop with a dyno. Tell him to dyno his car, and if it does hit 400+rwhp you'll pay for the dyno and make the trade. If it doesn't then he pays for his own dyno and you two part ways. Don't be lured by his horsepower claims. I have my doubts he's putting out that much power with his mods. Call him out on it.

thanks for the advice guys. i ended up picking up a spare engine tonite for $375. it looks rough on the outside, but i was assured that it was rebuilt, and then sat for a long while. i'll probably clean it up and swap over my parts on it. i also still have the rebuilt short block i got last year. i may still do something with that. he wants my car because it's a 90, and he heard that swapping in a 2jz is easier for some reason.
i do have a question about the engine i just got. it's an 87 and my car is a 90. is there anything i need to do to make it work?, or will it go right in.
i thank everyone for the help.

mmmm it should drop right in but your wiring harness probably isn't going to completely match up you might have to cut a plug or two from the old one to get it to all work. also I know the motor mounts are different but I think because it's the same engine it doesn't matter just the newer ones were better. Also everyone has a different meaning of "rebuilt" and some people will BS you good for a quick buck but if it's running your not out your money atleast.

thanks. i thought that i could use my mounts. i really hope the electronics work. i don't have the harness from his car. i believe that the cps has a different part number, but the plug sure looks the same. hopefully it's just a matter of using some parts off my engine to make it work.

You'll just have to swap over a few sensors from your old motor, so that you don't have to change any plugs on the harness.

Don't trade it! Post 89> pre 89 (I say this and I own a pre 89) 99% of the time you trade cars you end up with half assed shit. (A friend of mine traded 8 cars in three months and always came to me to work on stupid stuff the previous owners had half assed HARDCORE....) even if the motor is "BUILT" that doesn't mean it was done right. Build your own the RIGHT way & have piece of mind.
