I live in central ohio, (to get an indea of temps etc), and ive been using 10w30 oil, and im about to do an oil changed and i asked my friend who has a mk3 also, and he says he runs 15w50 and that i use wayyyy to thin of oil. I couldn't go off of just one person so i took it to the internets! What do you guys recommend?

One other question, ive been using straight 10w30 dino oil since my headgasket (at 155,000) and i was wondering when/how should i switch to synthetic? Should i just go full synthetic or should i use a blend then go full synthetic? When my metal headgasket was done the head was cleaned up, a few valves were replaced with stock ones, and that was about it. The bottom end was left untouched. So i just don't know what oil to run, or when to go synthetic or whatnot. Ill go make a thread in the oil section if i need too, but im just tryin to get an idea...

Your friend is giving you very bad, and dangerous advice.

After reading the links above, you will understand why, and you will be able to tell him, with authority that is backed by a thorough understanding of oil and how it works, that he's running wayyyy to thick of an oil.

Share the links with him - he may learn something.
