That's called... incompetence. Major upgrades, script changes and things like that should always be tested thoroughly before they happen on production systems.
That's where most of the work lies in that kind of job. Testing, planning, etc..

to compound things, i've recently switched computers (to a new macbook, YEAH!) so my data is all over the place.

IIRC my last complete backup was from march, but my last DB backup was from a few weeks ago.
