Be careful not to "fall in love with the car". Let it get started and take it out for a ride. Have someone that knows the car take a look. There's a checklist of items somewhere - pm me and I'll get you a link.

Cars are like girls. Once you fall in love whether they blow oil or farts its "cute" once you're in love and tolerable.

I agree with no mechanical ablilities this might not be the best car to choose.

grimreaper: the guy bought the car to restore, but he has very little to no time to work on the car and it is taking up garage space right now.

I'll have a better feel for it after he gets it running and I can take it for a spin.

Take VERY detailed pics and look everywhere for issues. Post em here and we'll be able to tell you.

There are a lot of horrible examples of our cars out there, some worse than others...

I can post the pictures from the CL ad after class.

I can tell you for a fact that there is some bubbling/rust spots on the drivers side door, passenger fender has 2 spots rusted through (replaceable), rear quarters have some rust, rear bumper has some scuff markers, it needs an intercooler and piping (previous owner was using refrigerator flex pipe and a leaking intercooler), and either a by-pass valve or bov. passenger door lock/handle assembly needs to be fixed, it has no ashtray/radio/cigarette lighter. Bottom half of the plastic on the steering column is missing. the rear trim underneath the left rear tail light is popping off a little bit.

Pictures will be up in about an hour

i'd steer clear of that, see all that rust? multiply it by 10 and thats how much rust thats there that you can't see.
im sure if you're patient you'll find another car in better condition.

don't buy it man.

first off you need a good amount of cash after you bought the car for parts because there is going to be a ton of stuff that needs to be replaced. i can guarantee you that one. then the fact that you can't work on cars your going to need even more money because paying someone to work on your car isn't cheap. i bought my recent car for $1700. that was just for the shell with a bhg. sounds sorta high, but i found one that was taken car of and owned by someone that wasn't broke. so it had about $1500 in performance parts. let alone a motor that was practically fine. anyway there are better deals out there just wait.

plus to even own a supra you need. mechanical knowledge and cash. or cash, no mechanical knowledge, and more cash. by the car your looking at and from what i see in your post it doesn't look like you have either.

I'll keep all of that in mind when I go to check it out again. I'm not completely set on this car, I'm still looking around. I want to upgrade from my naturally aspirated/auto/targa to a turbo/5spd/hardtop.

It's not an upgrade if that's your car as your avatar...

Don't sell the N/A for this rustbucket, if anything I'd:
- talk him down
- take what you need to put in the N/A car
- partout the rest

Don't get me wrong, I like the targa, it's just that when I have it off there's so much flex that I find it unbearable. I'm talking to another guy about red 89 that he's got for sale, it's in better condition but is a targa.
With the blue 87, if I choose to get that car I might take Poodles' advice and talk the guy down/swap the turbo parts and part out the rest. I'm not sure yet though.

2 things to add

Dont buy it if its going to be your daily driver, your gonna have too much downtime cuz its gonna have problems

And if you do buy it i wouldnt drive it too much or too hard with the boost leak, if the leak is large enough you could cook your turbo from overrevving it (the turbo not the engine)

if you are gonna go for it for a parts car i wouldnt pay anymore than $1000 and even thats pushing it.
even if you have to wait a couple months i can guarante you'll find a much better deal.

there isn't even an intercooler hooked up, the current owner tossed it, he has the accordian pipe hooked straight up to the 3000 pipe. I'm currently talking with another guy who has an 89 5spd turbo targa w/ about 130K on it and looks to be in great condition. I'm probably in too big of a hurry right now and that's something I cannot afford with these cars, I realize that.
