I need to replace my diff as well. Is it really that easy? Can someone walk me through it? Pics?

Thanks.

Ben

undo the driveshaft from the diff (4 bolts 14mm...need 14mm wrench and ratchet with 14mm socket and a 2" extension or just 2 14mm wrenches but ratchet are faster)........let back half of drive shaft rest on that bar in the trans tunnel.........undo the top nuts at the rear of the pumpkin(18mm I believe, with 3/8ths drive ratchet, you may need a breaker bar to slip over the ratchet handle cause they take some balls to break loose).......undo bottom bolts at the rear of pumpkin (18mm also I think)......undo the 12 nuts on the half shafts (6per side 14mm...they take some balls also but if your not a pussy you'll be fine...use parking break to stop the wheels from turning).....pull the half shaft cups towards the wheels and it should just clear the bolts and you can move the half shaft away from diff......then undo the 2 bottom bolts on diff ( 21mm I believe...ratchet is nice with breaker bar).....then pumpkin can be finagled out its kinda like playing the game "operation".

So how do you stop a clunking diff? Mine has done it from the day I got my car. Is it because the diff has lost all the preload?

the gears wear down and develop play, clutch packs wear out in LSD's, shims wear out

You basically have to either replace the gears and clutch's or reshim to remove the backlash

Basically rebuild the damn thing.

i'm pretty sure its your tranny mount. i had the exact same problem with my first car. i just sorta ignored it. then after i crashed the car and swaped my motor over to a new car it went away. why being that i practically used all the parts off my old car including the diff. and driveshaft. because i used the trans mount from the new car. it was different from the one in my car in one way. it had a rubber support that rested on the back of the tail shaft housing preventing any end to end movement. i can take pic sometime.

with all do respect...we aren't idiots!! I've been under his car many times and actually droped the trans mount for a second time to plug in the reverse sensor....its not his trans mount...and thanks for the offer but he or I don't need pics of the trans mount as we know all to well what one looks like...a little too well infact!

No, if the TPS is out of spec a bit you won't get surging at all RPMs. If it's not reading a fully closed throttle, it will freak out a bit.

Trust me, I know...

sounds like you have some play in your center bearing.... try grabbing the shaft and moving it up and down at the bearing...

you may not even notice play... but will give you the same symptoms
