reign, +1.

so is it a temp sensor or an optical sensor? what would happen if you covered it up so no light reached it?

why would climate control need a sunlight meter deally... if that's what id did you'd think that if you set your headlights to the first setting (has 4 modes right... off, first click, second click (lights come on) and the fourth is to flip the headlights on...) so wouldnt it make sense that the first click was hooked up to the optical sensor so that when it was dark the dash lights automatically come on?

It is for the climate control.

The Supra does not have automatic headlights or dash lights.

The first click doesn't do nothing, it keeps the headlights up but off when turning the switch backwards so that you can leave them up to clean or to prevent them from freezing in the winter.

Optical, photo diode. Works only in auto mode. Adds or subtracts bias to the Air Mix Control Servo Motor feedback loop ie; it biases position of the blending damper. Pretty old school compared to a modern car.

First position of the headlight switch is what Toyota calls the Hold Position. The headlights will be held in whatever position they were in prior to the switch being placed to Hold.

I was just trying to what they could have used a light sensor for... would make sense, most modern cars use that type of system for there lights.

Lol trust me, I didn't just pop that off the top of my head. Body Electrical Systems Manual. I did have to analyze the damn schematic though ;)

As pointed out earlier the system has an in cabin temp sensor. The ambient temp sensor is that vertical thing located near the hood latch. The system also has a check and servo calibration (for lack of a better word) connector. If you ever pull the dash be sure the servo connector is set up correctly when reinstalling. See the service manual for details.

I too was wondering wtf that optical sensor was, I thought for some reason maybe it had something to do with glassbreak or something.... iono wtf I was thinking...

good to know, thanks guys!

hahaha... J/K guys... But yeah, it is extremely helpful to have people on here that actually KNOW wtf is up... We all learn, from JJ... and we all get a laugh, from John... Its another reason I love this community... At least next time someone asks, we'll know what that little "lego" thing is, lol...

There is 3 sensors for the AUTO setting on the climate controls

1st one is in the front of the supra at the hood latch
It is the "Ambient Temperature Sensor" it measures your outside temperature so if your climate control is set at auto and you set the AC to 65° and it is 60° outside it will just open the vent to the outside air and turn off your AC compressor until the inside if the car matches 65°

2nd Is the Ambient Temperature inside the car this sensor is mounted in the top of the inside of your dash it pulls a small sample of the air into the AC box but this sensor reads the air temp inside your car infront of the dash by the glove box. The auto climate system will use this temperature to stride for what the auto setting is at.

3RD Is the solar sensor! when you turn you auto climate to 70° and you live by the equator and have blazing full UV sahara sun beeming into your car instead of sending and wasting precious cold air by sending it to your feet it aims the cold air more at your face instead of the floor of the car.
The solar sensor adjust your bi level which aims air at your windshield on defrost mode only at your face if set manuel or on auto in bright light or aims the air at your feet and face when darker towards the night.

I should know this because i removed all three of these sensors since i removed the complete AC system and turn on the heater when i get cold only or to defrost the windshield. (manuel mode will work fine with these three sensors gone.)
