what is this thing on the dash?

on my 88 turbo i have what looks like some kind of optical sensor or something on the passenger side of the dash board next to where the windshield meets the dash. any ideas? it's plastic and kind of a dark or reddish color. :icon_conf

close but not quite. the temp sensor is above the glovebox on the left side of the fake vent.

the black lego in the corner by the windshield is an optical sensor for the climate control. it measures the amount of sunlight coming in.
