i just finished getting the paint off and sanded the steering wheel all the way up to 1000 grit.i found out the wood is spruce .i like the natural shine of the wood and wanted to know whats the best clear that will resist the sunlight and be durable ??

i like helmsman or deft, but i've never had to do much more than the occasional project with it.

maybe you could spray an automotive clearcoat, but i'm not sure how that'll react with the wood.

Just put a couple good coats of lacquer on it...get it at your local hardware store, comes in a spray paint can and is great looking, good shine, and good protection. I just did a dash in a 1963 boat with some Minwax Spray Lacquer on some exotic wood and looks great.

Forget laquer, it yellows, it flakes, it's not particularly hard. If you use it on a steering wheel I don't think it will last for too long.

What you want to do is use a high quality urethane clear coat with a hardner. Guarantee you it will look much better, and it will last a lot longer. Urethane is much much harder than laquer, and it wont turn yellow.
