Can anyone tell me what would be the cause of this discoloration happening on my hood? And what I could do to prevent it from spreading or fix it?

well since you live in cali i would have to say the sun is fading the paint. is it a fairly new paint job? if so take it back to them and have them fix it.

It's not a fairly new paint job. It just seems that it's happening no where else on the car but the top of the hood. I wash my car regularly, and I don't take it to gas station car washes either.

Do you have all your heat shields in place over the turbo/exhaust manifold? Also, is the "fire blanket" still on the underside of the hood? Hot engine bays and not having some sort of buffer under the hood can cause paint to do funny things too.

I still do have the heat blanket under the hood, although unfortunately I don't have the heat shield on my turbo anymore. I'll have to look into that.

Somebody needs to polish the hell out of their hood and keep it waxed. ;)

Mine is starting to do the same thing. I'll have to do a paint job soon... :(

Same here, at least with my Mk2. Sucks living where the roads are paved with dirt.

Can't keep a car clean, even with more than regular washing.

Cut buff polish wax.

Wax that ish regualary. Like once or twice a month.

Meguirs ultimate compound works pretty well. And the meguirs gold class wax is good too.

That Ultimate compound is very abrasive, use that too many times and you'll have no more paint. Try to start out with a compound that isn't as abrasive to see if that will give you the desired results and work your way up through the more aggressive compounds.

Mine started on the hood. After a couple years the targa and tops of the fenders started showing the same symptoms. Old clearcoat + FL/CA/NV heat/sun = :'(
