I don't know the weight nor a good brand. Up to knowledge my tranny has never been serviced. Gears feel dry, and can be heard at idle. Could I put Lucas gear oil and something else?

redline mt90 - you can read about it extensively in jdubs specialty section for lubes and motor oils.

Some of the normal auto parts stores carry it in certain areas, but you're best bet are speed shops.

If you need the oil, use a cheap conventional oil until you can get the MT-90 in, all the other synthetics I can think of have friction modifiers in em (bad for syncro function).

This is all covered in the Oil and Lubrication section of the forums...

if they dont have it in stock and you dont feel like waiting, i use mobil 1 75w-90 which is the proper weight for the r154.

Alright I will look around tomorrow and If I can't find it then I will get mobil1. Yeah I was looking in my "BIBLE TO THE SUPRA" aka the big red maintenence book from Toyota. It said

Transmission oil-
Oil grade:API GL-4 or GL-5
Viscosity: SAE 75W-90 or 80W-90
Capacity: 7M-GE 2.4 liters (2.5 US qts, 2.1 lmp. qts)
7M-GTE 3.0 liters (3.2 US qts. 2.6 lmp. qts)

However it doesn't really tell me on where to fill it it shows the drain plug and something attached to the side

a remove the drain plug and drain the oil
b reinstall drain plug securely
c add new oil until it beings to run ouit of the filter hole

Do I fill from the top which means remove the shifter or what?
I don't have access to a lift nor have something to pump the fluid so how do i do this?

I just went through this about 5 months ago -- you can put it in through the shifter mount, but be careful as you can overfill it. The best way, albeit more complicated way is to fill it from the filler hole with a siphon pump from the bottle, until it starts to run out of the hole...as the book says. BTW, when I changed mine I used Amsoil Severe Gear 75w90. Felt pretty good afterward, but shortly after my motor chooched, so....*shrug*

if youre working in a shop with a lift it is simply retarded to fill it through the shifter hole.

if you dont however have a lift, then yes it is a little nicer to work inside the car as opposed to on the ground.

also take notice, your repair manual gives two acceptable gear oils however only the w58 takes either or.

the r154 takes 75w-90 only.

Thanks I'll keep that in mind. Yeah the only way I can do it is fill it from the top so I will drain it which probaly only about .2 of qt. will come out and just put 3 qts in since the book says the max is 3.2 qts

Pull the fill plug and fill till it comes out, underfilling will cause oil starvation and heat, overfilling will cause leaks.

Mobil 1 is overpriced and contains friction modifiers IIRC, I don't recommend it. If shifting feels like crap, you NEED the MT-90...

i filled through the fill hole without a lift, just takes patience and an assistant to fill the siphon pump with me laying under the car.
