I'm actually thinking about painting my car a mix of custom colors.
The "top" of the car, hood, lamp doors, A posts, roof, quarter sails and hatch would all be a very dark color. If I get a CF hood and lamp doors as planned, they would be painted, but only with the translucent color, and pearl/clear coats. I want to see the weave under the paint, but they will be the same color as the top part of the car. The rear wing would be lighter in color, especially if I'm using the 89+ wing. The 88 wing would look better darker along with the hatch, and since I have an 88, would likely go that route. The color will not go down further than the mid molding line. (So the header panel up front would have a "stripe" of dark the width of the lamps, and the rear panel between the tail lamps would be darker as well. It's black mostly now as is, I would convert that all over to the new darker body color.)
Anyone hate this idea? Say it's too 240ish, and that you hate it, but that's fine, I've seen it done, and on GT's like ours from the 80's, it looks great when it's done right. (The trick is to complete the colors, wet sand them, and then clear over everything so there is no hard line you can feel or see between the lighter lower part of the car, and the darker upper portion.) I might even use two different color pearls to really set off the difference in various types of light.
This is how they painted 240's for many years, but I've only seen a few Surpa's done up that way, and I like it. It makes the car appear sleeker, just like the midline molding helps to make our cars appear thinner in cross section. (So does the lower blackout area in the rocker moldings.) Painting this area the same color as the car makes the Supra look thicker, and more lowered to the ground. With the top setup darker than the lower panels of the car, you can go full color to the rockers, and not get that same problem since there is a thinner band of light color to work with.
