You guys forgot a few things.

Point out your automatic climate control, where you set the temp and leave it alone - even the AC is automatic. That feature has never been available in a Camaro, not even in the modern ones.

Targa beats T tops, every time, and I don't think the T tops were available in the IROC variant anyway.

The 350ci version was never mated with a standard transmission. Ya, that's a serious sports car.

Oh, and keep in mind the Supra is nearly half the displacement and puts out 5 more hp.

You know, I dont remember if those were even 4 bolt main blocks that they put in that era of camaro(scratching mullet underneath my summitracing.com ballcap). The heads were crap, compression ratio was crap, intake system was crap(torquey little beast, doesnt like topend cams but loves boost). Tuned port was good for the time, the long runners and small ports kills it though. I think thats why they didnt go with better gears and stick shift. The motor had enough torque to compensate the slush box and highway gears(gas mileage). Did I just post this crap, sorry guys. Buzzzzzzz(sound of cutting shears). Later.

they used a borgwarner t5, it wouldnt hold the torque of the 350. They used that tranny in the 5.0 stangs, the mid-80's model turbo Z's and other applications. Over 300 torque and your on borrowed time.

Hence the LS1/T56 swap.

BTW, an LS1/T56 with a set of 4.10s out back (12 bolt usually at that point) in a 3rd gen is no joke. The 3rd generation was the lightest of the fbodies.

What do you say to... your two friends who just bought '88 IROC Z's?
... Something to win the classic argument of "which car is better" and what not...

Wanna race for pinks :naughty: & turn up your boost :evil2:

IROC's came with 350ci (5.7ltr) motors...
the 85 and 86 IROC was available with a 215 hp 305TPI. The IROC package was only available on the Z28. The 87-92 Camaros were also available with the 305, but not in the IROC package. The IROC package came standard with the 5.7 starting in 88. Also in 88 the Z28 package as a stand alone was dropped to return later in the 4th gens.

T-tops were always an option beginning in 85 and avalable on the IROC.

As for the Automatic only comment, actually in 86 Chevrolet sold a very small number of IROCs with the L89 option (the 350tpi) and a small number of those were also sold with the T5 from what Ive read.

Overall the 3rd gen camaro was a pretty capable car and very reasonable platform to build off of. If you can get a hold of a 1990 with the 1LE package not only is it rare its the best of the generation with 245hp, 12inch aluminum calipers, a 3.42 Posi rear and an aluminum driveshaft. The IROC has always had a capable suspension and the 90 1LE you could chose your spring rates even. On top of all that the parts array available for the SBC is staggering and a few simple bolt on can easily get the car over the 300hp mark. Add to that the ease of doing a 5 or even 6 spd swap into the car and its really nothing to scoff at.

I had an 88 and I have to say I loved the car. Putting stiffer struts in it was a must, but the car hooked up great and had disturbing amounts of highway speed. The IROC is the only street car Ive owned besides my 78 T/A that saw over 150mph on the street. Yeah, I used to have a mullet. :nono:

The IROC replaced the Z28 weezl... lol. When the IROC name was dropped to go with Daytonas, the Z28 status returned. The 350 they had were not bad, but overall as a platform, Supras are much easier to build.

My 84 Z28 handled like a god damn dream, and for auto'xing, id take it over a supra any day of the year. But if you want just pure speed, without having to upgrade the rest of the car, the MkIII is so much easier.

Doward, btw, do you realize how damn hard it is to swap in the t56 ls1 combo? its a nightmare lol. Easier to just build a crazy fast 350 and then do a t56

that isnt exactly correct, it was possible to get a Z28 or a Z28/IROC in 85. 86 and 87, it wasnt until 88 that the Z28 option was dropped as a package, and IROC became the only sport option. In the first three years you could only get the B4Z package (IROC option set) on a Z28, but you could actually order just a Z28 if you so desired. In 91 the 4th gen was born and Z28 came back as an option.

Why did your friends buy the same car's?
It's actually kind of funny - every time one buys a new truck or car, the other is a week away from getting something similar... from S10's to Blazers then to full sizes... now Camaros. And because they're both diehard Chevy guys... they want to "put my not-even-running foreign rice burner in it's place"...
Hopefully I'll win some Camaros pretty soon so I can sell them and build the Supra some more. :)

Oh, btw - I said the thing about mullets, and they were speechless.
