What date did the 89 become the 89.5?

We all know of the differences between the 89 and 89.5 Supra (for me the big issue being the wiring harness), but does anyone know the production date that this change actually happened? I've been trying to nail it down. Originally I thought it was June of '89 but I've seen people with production dates as early as February '89 with the 89.5 revisions? Anyone have a straight answer? If not, post your production date and if your MK3 is an 89 or 89.5!

Mine is 10/88 and is an '89. Grey plug harness, but the '87T wiring harness plugged right in, with the only issues being the ABS harness and the headlight idle-up wire.

What changes are you seeing or referring to? There is no difference in model year 1989's as far as engine harness wiring goes. They're all the same. The only major or important change that happened part way through the 1989 model year is the front subframe and engine mounts. (From January 1989 production -- starting with frame MA70-0119327).

The wiring changed for the 1990 model year. No engine wiring changed partway through the year for any A70's that I've seen (with the exception of minor, inconsequential changes that happened in some pre-89's that do not affect interchangeability), just at model year changes. This is the information I have, and I've never had it be wrong yet:

01/86 - 08/86 = 1986.5 Model Year (Frame Numbers: MA70-0000001 to MA70-0028016)
08/86 - 08/87 = 1987 Model Year (Frame Numbers: MA70-0028017 to MA70-0076230)
08/87 - 08/88 = 1988 Model Year (Frame Numbers: MA70-0076231 to MA70-0104940)
08/88 - 08/89 = 1989 Model Year (Frame Numbers: MA70-0104941 to MA70-0136626)
08/89 - 08/90 = 1990 Model Year (Frame Numbers: MA70-0136627 to MA70-0153209)
08/90 - 08/91 = 1991 Model Year (Frame Numbers: MA70-0153210 to MA70-0159891)
08/91 - 12/92 = 1992 Model Year (Frame Numbers: MA70-0159892 to MA70-0162455)

Off-topic: Many sources and catalogs list production ending in 05/1993, including many Toyota sources like the parts catalog, with the exception of actual frame build sheets which don't actually show any cars produced after December 1992, despite catalogs showing the car in production until 05/1993.

gotta say though, I did disassemble the chassis harness on my 87 to match up to the 89 ECU (did drivetrain swap into N/A 87 hardtop), none of the diagrams I had matched.... luckily there's this color coding thing....

Where did you get your diagrams? You need specific diagrams for what you're using. 86-88 are basically all the same, 89, 90, 91 and 92 are all different.

You're correct. The circuits throughout 1989 are all the same, which is what you stated, so yes, the wiring is the same. The pin position for two wires on the interior body plugs are different half way through the year. Specifically the B1 body plug. Check out an early 89 pin out versus a late 89 pin out. You should see a subtle variation.

Being that the fist year MKIV was billed as 1993.5, I always assumed there was an actual 93 A70 (JZA70) that just never made it to the US. Not the case? Or were the frames stamped JZA70 as well?

GA70, MA70 and JZA70 all appear to have ended at the end of December, 1992.

You are correct about production of the JZA80 starting in May, 1993.

Makes sense, so then even the September thru December 92 units were still 92MY cars? Not '93?

they were year specific for each year model (TSRM) diags. I remember re-arranging the wires once and noting that it was totally wrong, so I just matched them up from the coding/useage

There are actually some mistakes in various manuals sometimes. Toyota occasionally releases corrections, sometimes they don't.

I've noted a number of errors in various manuals (not just for the Supra) over the years. There is the possibility the "89" diagrams you had wouldn't have matched any 89 if there were errors in the publication.

I guess my point is that it doesn't necessarily mean there was any changes through the year, just that none of them may match.

Oh yeah, I've got an account for Toyota and Lexus TechDoc, the overseas manuals are crazy. Too many regions in one manual for sure, it can be quite confusing to know exactly what you're looking for.
