Unless you are planning on totally taking the car apart, and making sure the original paint is never seen again through any crack, I'd say a fresh coat of that original color would be best. To me, nothing looks worse that a nice black paint job that shows it used to be white, or gay blue or whatever. That's just nasty.

Just last week I saw a jaw dropping new Silver paint job on a 240SX. The guy popped the hood, and the silver was all done in the engine bay. The guy had spent a fortune on the car. But down under the headlights within the front end, I could see that original red that was on almost every factory 240SX had. It ruined it for me.

+1 on the prep work.Bad prep often ruins an otherwise good paint job.My MK3 was originally white, and had been repainted twice that I know about with shitty prep work,so everything/everywhere was oversprayed white, made it a real PITA when I went to the candy black.Got a ton of time into just repainting/cleaning up little crap(especially under hood and behind the grille area.)I feel the same about two-tone and fades that don't carry through the door jambs, just looks like ass IMO(even the quicky paint job on my cressida is two tone through all 4 jambs.)

Gloss black.

Black with a red flake is gonna look like a bass boat....

Depends on the size of flake/metallic.Black does tend to make any flake look larger or stand out more than it would on other colors.
