I was certain I'd seen a similar thread before but I searched and searched with no luck.
Can anyone shoot me some links of reliable relays to use for the 12v fuel pump mod?
Since I don't want to risk my fuel pump shutting off, what are some high quality relays I can use? All I can find are china made relays. I can't risk it frying on me.

Thanks.

I used a GROTE relay (30A IIRC)

Sould be fine as long as the relay is installed correctly with the proper gauge wire (bigger is always better) and solid connections, especially the ground make sure it is on bare metal. A wire brush drill attachment works great for this and a few self tapping screws to make sure it doesn't come loose. I would also suggest wiring it to be easily bypassed, ie female crimp connector on the fuel pump signal wire and male connector on the fuel pump wire so you can just connect them if something goes wrong. Don't forget to fuse the power wire you run back there also and keep some spare fuses in the car.

Grote products are for automotive application. I haven't really had any issues with their products before. Napa uses them almost exclusively for generic relays and electrical in my area.

I agree with you there as far as my starter and electric fan relay are concerned. But most people mount their fuel pump relay in the hatch area, so being a sealed unit shouldn't be much of a factor. However, better safe than sorry when the fuel pump is concerned.

IIRC, a lot of the 80's GM relays were simple icecube relays (like already pictured)

Most of them aren't actually sealed, that's why you don't mount them upside down... There are sealed ones out there with a skirt on them with a matching connector that seals completely though.

Because most of them are inside the car in the power distribution panels. My relay is in the engine bay, hence, it is sealed.

How reliable were those 80s GM vehicles?

I can walk out to the miata and find unsealed relays under the hood ;)

The have covers over them and they're mounted the correct way. Most vehicles aren't designed for submersion...

Tee hee. I see what you're going for there...

To quote an old friend (a Mopar/Ford fan IIRC), "GM's are pieces of shit. However, they're pieces of shit for a looooong time." :p
