What's going on guys? I was wondering what are the advantages of running an Externally Wastegated turbo rather than an Interanlly Wastegated? I'm running a Frank 5 Greddy TD06-20g and was just wondering if I'd gain anything running a 40mm HKS Wastegate with Dump Tube? Any thoughts or responses are greatly appreciated. Thanks a lot guys.

All depends on what Turbo and Trim you're trying to control!

If you had something with a big compressor section and a tight AR you might not get enough flow from an internal gate to control it so with an external you could change to a bigger gate.

Having said this ATP have just released .63 and .82 ar Internal gate housings for the GT 35's when all that used to be available was 1.06!

Personally Id go external, I love the sound, and it scares all the little 16 yos in hondas around here, they hear the sound and are like oooo hes fast, HAHAHA. I dont have a turbo :-( but its what I WOULD get.

Alright. Now I plan on running around 25 psi on the dyno (with race gas of course). What spring would I need? Sorry if it's a dumb question. Just trying to gain some knowledge.

depends on what you want your base boost or off boost controller boost psi to be. If you are running an electronic boost controller you can effectively double the boost psi rating of the spring. I had a 10.2 psi spring in my 40 mm HKS gate and ran 7 to 8 psi on just the wastegate and 29 psi holding until redline on my HKS EVC EZ.

It really adds a board range of tuning to a part that can be a pain in the butt to change being the wastegate spring when you have that much adjustablity at your finger tips. And the award of "run on sentence of the thread goes to!" Thank you, thank you.

Haha thanks for the responses guys. So a standard 40mm HKS WG with a 14 psi spring would be fine for me since i'll be running around 15-18 psi on the street and 25 psi hopefully on the dyno?

Yes, because it will open alittle sooner than 14 or 15 psi on just wastegate so you could still dial it down alittle if you wanted to.

Thanks X. I appreciate the help. Last and final step will be trying to source a cheap set of cams and shims (not likely)!

i look it this way: IJ uses internal and he pushes more than I will :biglaugh: so maybe it's not so bad? I mean sure you won't get that sound, but who cares, you don't need to buy a wastegate that costs hundreds of dollars, and it'll free up some space down there too just for kicks, maybe make it easier to reach something in the future or w/e.
