Well i bought a new set of tails bcause there was a couple scatches and that fun stuff on the tails on my 89 supra. Well i started to take them out and they were glued in so i pulled and yanked tell the one busted in a million pieces. I was able to save the othe two pieces :icon_bigg. When i placed them side by side i noticed the ones i took out were JDM, and my new ones are US:3d_frown: . I didnt know they were JDM otherwise i would have left them in.

Wow that sucks...just keep them and look on ebay....ocassionaly you can find single jdm lights. If you want them to look better get some light duty creamy coumpound and a high speed buffer. 2~3 passes then a good coat of carnuba wax and they will look good as new:thumbup:

You'd find one in Japan, Aus or NZ without too much hassle :)

Definately hit them with some plastic polish - but be careful!

Best stuff Ive found for polishing plastic/acrylic/lexan. I used to own a 3 wheeled car known as a Tri-Magnum. It had a single sheet of flat lexan for the windscreen and I lived in the mojave desert at the time. It didnt take long for it to look like crap and become hard to see through. A few minutes with the meguires by hand and it looked like new again. I used this stuff for everything after that and it works wonders.

As for the breakage of the ones you were taking out, that really sucks, but if it were me I would keep my eye out for a replacement of just piece (take Suzi up on that offer) and put the JDM's back in. They are far better looking imho.

Its not that hard to get off but at the age these things are they are rather brittle. Once off however you will find that they are painted on the back side of the lens with reflective paint which is impossible to remove without destroying the lens. I know, I tried it and nearly ruined mine. Fortunately I tested first in an inconspicuous area with a variety of methods.

I think if I had a sandblast cabinet I could have removed the paint, then done an acetone dip to restore the sheen (Ive seen this done for other things to restore a gloss and it needs to be done in such a way as to restore luster without completely destroying the part). I wouldnt do this without some experimentation on some pieces I didnt need first, but I think it could be done.

In the end when I smoked my lenses, I ended up using tint spray on the outside of the center section, to match the blackout I did on the two other sections. It came out "OK" but not ideal. If I wasnt a cheap bastid I would have just bought some JDM's

not the best pic, but its the only one I could find of my USDM tails, smoked. You can see that the center section still doesnt match all that well and I would have gone back and worked on them more if I hadnt sold the car.

Unless you have good reason, I wouldn't do it.

If you do have good reason, and some patience - it is easy enough to remove. It just uses plastic tabs which click into place. As with pulling apart anything made from old, brittle plastic - it could break in the process.

My JDM ones came off with no effort for some reason.. look in my build thread it is in the begining.

Hmmm....something I'm going to have to think about. Bought some JDM Tails on Ebay, and the ad said one of the tabs was cracked (that sits behind the rear quarter trims)...no biggie. I get the tails, and one is cracked, and the other is completely missing. Probably not a big deal once they're on the car, but should my OCD decide to kick in and I, say, wanted to transplant the JDM lens to a better condition frame...just wanted to know how easy or difficult it would be. Thanks for the inputs guys, keep 'em coming. I can snap pics if anyone would like to see, for reference as to what I'm talking about.

I like the Jdm's alot better. I think i might find the passenger side and re-install them on my supra. And then sell the us ones
