I come from a land down under
I would imagine there would be a lag/slow response to engine speed change Vs Oil pressure as the T Stat opened but surely once the cooler has a head of Oil there shouldn't be a drop unless it's very restrictive (which RX7 coolers aren't)

Im picking a cooler out tomorrow.

Do you have any way to test the rx-7 one? ill ship it to you and you can do what you'd like with it. I have nothing to measure pressure drop or anything like that, Just a hack saw :D

Ian - What's throwing me off is pressure not continuing to build as RPM increased...Grim takes the cooler out of the loop and it's back to building pressure. A lag I can understand. This has me scratching my head a bit...the design has to have something to do with it.

Grim - I have an Rx-7 cooler here...I may give some sort of pressure drop test a try. Did you clean or have the cooler cleaned when you got it? (kind of a reach here).

cooler was soaked in lacquer, degrease, soaked in water, soaked in wd-40 and finally flushed 2-3 times in fresh oil. Held a full qt(give or take a bit) which is right at what mazda specs it at iirc. Both end tanks get HOT with thermostat installed, opposite one barely gets warm with it out. Its like it hits a wall. Instant response to 20-25psi then it levels off. I didnt rev over 35-3800 rpms like spooling t70 did so maybe it would have kept climbing eventually.

Is the stock oil sensor port before or after the oil filter in regards to flow path?

lmao, direction? i flipped a coin and called it in the air, how do you do it?
(i snooped around the rx-7 sites, port next to thermostat is exit)

The stock sensor is in the oil channel that runs the length of the block...it's post filter (on a remote system too).

Castrol filters are made by Wix. The MaxPro uses conventional media, the MaxPro Plus use a synthetic media.
The filter definitely should not be the cause, nor should the leak at the CPS.

One other thing could cause this...the piston squirters. If one or more is stuck open or opening early (more likely) it would be a pressure bleed on the system. What you are seeing suggests it...at idle the squirters are closed (good pressure). If they are opening at 20 psi (vs ~40 psi spec), oil pressure would slow/stop building as RPM increased and the increased pressure from the pump forced the squirters open more.

Another possibility...the bearings. I don't think this is as likely though.

Haha- I have near the same setup and problem. Question, what would cause the piston squirters to open early? And is there a way to test or fix this without pulling the engine?

Worn squirter bolts. You have to pull the engine (or at least the oil pan) to get to them.

are you running the same oil cooler?

....I will kick my dad's ass if that turns out to be the problem, he insisted they'd be fine...:3d_frown:

spoolint78- I forget what brand oil cooler I have, I think its an Earl's I'll check tomorrow.

So you didn't measure or even plastigauge the new bearings?

EHhahhhhahhehhhhhhh sensitive subject!!!!!!!!!

Luckily it didn't tear up the crank, and I replaced them with the correct bearings today. :)

Well I changed the oil as well as removed the oil cooler. Still have the same effect with the pressure dropping. I'll be looking into change the oil pump and checking the oil squirters in the new year.

Oil pump pulley seems fine, no wobbling when reving etc.

Also, I did find some shavings in the pan that was magnetic. Pretty sure this is just the material from the oil pump shaft issue that I had. Perhaps it got stuck in the oil pump somehow and is just creating a problem, or possible blocking the pickup.

I think you guys might be right about the culprit being either the oil squirters or the pump.
