Weird brake problem

Sometimes when I brake, my passenger front side makes a thumping noise. It doesn't happen all the time, and if I let off and hit the brakes again, it wont do it the second time. The car still stops even when thumping. Any ideas?

No... It's a thump thump thump until I let off or I stop. It happens about once a second. I'll get Boost Lee to post in here, I took him for a ride yesterday, maybe he can describe it better. I don't think it's a warped rotor because it doesn't happen every time. Sometimes, it wont happen at all. It just started doing it one day, on a normal stop, with no extreme braking any time before it that day. I'd driven it ~50 miles already that day before it happened.

BL said it wasn't a wheel bearing or a rotor problem, but he was out of ideas.

It's most definately not a wheel bearing or warped rotor.

The sound...I've never heard before. At least not from the braking system. ;)

The best way to describe it is a rapid but steady paced....knock.
I guess it would be more appropriate to call it a thump, but calling it a knock would more resemble the way it sounds.

It only happened once every few minutes when braking.
I've dealt with brake issues before...But this one is over my head.

Nope. ABS has been removed. I thought that the first time it happened but one of the previous owners deleted the ABS system

I'll try that later today and let you know what happens, but wouldn't that cause it on multiple wheels, or all the time, or both?

Check the little clips that hold the pads in place. One of them might be worn or broke, letting the pad move up and down.

Could even be a stuck caliper. Mine does that on one side. It makes a nice train wheels on train rails noise when turning at low speeds (1-5 MPH)

LOL, Im guessin I had the same problem, mine was a thumping noise on my drivers side. It ended up that one of the bolts holding the whole break caliper on(the top one) had come loose and then fallen completely off. I drove it for like 30mins and when I got home and tried to leave the next day the break assembly actually flipped back and stopped my tire from rotating.

Maybe your sound is different, but I had this and all it was one bolt, 12m 8 grade. auto zone has it for like 40cents.

If it was my car, I would remove and inspect the entire brake setup on that side to confirm what it is. Pull the caliper off, check all the bolts and sliders, etc. I'm sure you'll find something not right. Fix and reassemble then bleed.

Visual inspection is your best bet.

Agreed!, i had this bad thump when i would go into reverse and then hit the brakes and then once when i was taking off and then stopping. I pulled the wheel off to find out that the lower ball joint had no bolts holding it in place. The shop that worked on my car must of taken them out waiting for me to get into an accident or something (god damn assholes). I would just do what Jeff said. Theres no better way to find out what it is but looking for it visually.
