Which version of Firefox are you running? I'm using Firefox 2.0 and if I click the little X on the tab it just closes the tab. Also, Ctrl+W is supposed to close just the current tab you're on. Try that and see if it also closes multiple tabs.

my firefox does the same thing....there are smaller tabs directly above the page you are viewing and they have x's on those for closing that particular page

If you right click on the tab to close it, also make sure you are clicking "Close" instead of "Close Other Tabs". If you accidentally do that, it will close all but the one you are looking at. Err.. wait, that's the new IE. Either way, I've never had a problem with Firefox. I've been using it since it was a beta called "Firebird" - even THEN it was better than IE.
