Finally have my motor back together and running, but now the water pump is bad. It was a new one from a local auto parts store, and I know that it can happpen from any brand or store.

I have searched but have found nothing as far as a recommended waterpump... my question: should i get one from toyota, are there aftermarket ones that work better, or just go back to the local parts store and try again?

opinions please.

I dont want another dud and would like a decent coolant system. Goals are around 375 to the wheels, DD. 87 turbo 7mgte, stock radiator for now.

Parts like that, i.e. brake master, clutch master, clutch slave, water pump, I try to bite the bullet and get them from the dealer whenever possible. While dealer parts wear out just like other aftermarket parts, they seem to last longer in my opinion with less swapping a bad one for another good one that really is another bad one. Went through 5 power steering pumps on my GMC truck from O'rielly's. Its an old truck and didn't really warrant new dealer parts.

You could always call Jeff Watson at Champion Toyota 713-943-7010 as they have the best prices on Supra parts. Talk to Jeff and tell him that you are from Supramania, he will get you the best price possible. He is a big Supra nut, just like the rest of us.

Hope that helps

IMO Gates makes the best water pump. Both the housing and impeller wheel are forged. There a bit hard to find but very well worth it. Only $80 ish too.

I got mine from autozone. Looked to me like its built better than the stocker. Of course my stocker looked like hell on the impeller blades..

ALL the housings are remanned stock housings.

ALL

Unless you go with a new OEM one, and it's not a used housing...

Not a true statement at all. If it were true they would all have Aisin stamped into them.

Airtex and Gates are the only aftermarket pumps worth considering for replacement.

I used to work for Advance Auto, and I saw stuff like this all the time.

Basically, even if it's a failure prone part in whatever they're rebuilding, if its not broken, they don't fix it.

So they make a product that barely works, but still technically works. Starters and other electrical parts and master cylinders are the worst for this. I've been through like four master cylinders, and I'm thinking that the performance clutch and stainless lines are to blame. Now whenever mine go out, I just get it rebuilt and save myself the hassle. Even if I do get employee discounts, it's not worth having to tear down your car again.

Actually, now that I think about it, the only thing that I've gotten from advance that's on my car (other than oil and cleaning supplies and such) was an optima bluetop that ended up costing me 40 bucks brand new, which is the only reason why I bought it.

Go OEM.

Just my humble opinion.
