I’ve just be wondering.

We all know that that most common route for someone attempting to hook their JZ series motor up to a manual transmission is to use a R154 supra transmission with a 1JZ Bellhousing and flywheel, correct?

We also know that MKIV NA supras came with the W58,that means it will naturally bolt up to a JZ series engine. I’m also fairly certain that I’ve read that the bellhousing of the MKIV W58 can’t be exchanged with the bellhousing of the MKIII W58, correct?
So…

If one was unable for whatever to get their hands on a R154 bellhousing, and had no intention of passing the 400-450TQ limit on the W58 gearbox, could a gearbox from a MKIV NA supra be sourced and installed in a MKIII with a JZ series motor without any major medications? I’m guessing it would be a yes as the transmission was already available in MKIII’s, but I wanted to get some confirmation as I have no idea to what extent the MKIII W58 differs from the MKIV W58

Thanks

Josh

I've done this many times in cressida. Here's the ingredients

mk3 w58 (for correct shifter location
mk4, SC, or IS bellhousing, clutch fork, throwout bearing

Good for about 350whp. Done and done.

Im thinking about doing this because the W58 is so much smoother for DD but I have 2 R154's so I think I will never use the W58

I wouldn't use the W58 for a few reasons.
1. Can't handle more then 300-400 HP
2. Trouble sourcing parts
Unless you really need to use a w58 us it or else r154 will be the way to go.

its torque mainly that kills the transmission and hard launching. i personally think the w58 is fine for the 1jz (more often less torque then 2jz/7m) for 350ish-rwtq max safe WITHOUT hard launches. my 1jz/w58 combo has been together for at least 3 years with occasional hard launches. torque is probably low to mid 300 and around 400ishrwhp on full boost.

some na-t mkiv guys have 500rwhp. i think the mkiv w58 has a bigger output shaft. i dont know for a fact though. they (the one that has actually lasted for awhile) say that to just roll off the line and dont shift hard. been working fine for me.

what about the w55 (is300)?

I have a friend who's running it in an is300 w/gte block with 620rwhp/5xx tq.

But running a transmission from lexus would defeat the object of not using the w58 from the MKIV - The shifter is going to be in the wrong place.

How quickly is 400bhp at the fly coming from a 2J going toast a MKIII W58?

Is modifying a MKIV W58 to work in a MKIII going to be an ass?

Should I just suck it up and pay the $600 for a 1J R154 bellhousing?

w58's flood junkyards.
smooth shifting and great for DD

r-154 unbeatable reliability and performance supposedly "harder" shifting.

I have had both, and i can honostly say the r-154 is smooth shifting and not as much of a chore as some say it is.

I'd go r-154.

Later on down the road you might kick yourself in the arse

sorry for gravediggin

Ditto, you go W58 and no upgrades to motor, and your going to have to learn to granny it, no fun, and you know your gonna wanna get on it alot after a 2jz swap.
Put in the R154 and save yourself some time, and beat on it all day. You will get used to the R154.

But the bellhousing alone for a R154 alone is an extra $600. You have to admit that's a lot of extra money to pay for that reliability, especially if you remember that I'm not going to be pushing the envelope power wise

Could buy 6 replacement W58s with that much :D

?????

2jz needs 1jz bellhousing, and DM has it for like 320 something.

I don't reckon the shipping quote is going to be too nice for Cali To London.

I have to pay rip off Britain prices, and it's £300 from Toyota UK :(

You can put a 2JZ W58 bellhousing on a 7M W58 transmission.

You can use a 2JZ W58 with an internal shifter modification. You will also need the top plate and parts from the 7M W58.

You will also need the 2JZ W58 flywheel and any standard 2JZ W58 clutch kit.

I've been searching a little while now doing a mkiv w58 swap into the mkiii. Other than the internal shifter modification, will it work with the 7m-w58 driveshaft? What kind of shifter modification is needed?

the driveshaft should be the same but not sure about length.. i usually have a one piece made locally or a two piece modified
