I had a quick question. I am a former supra owner and want to get some helpful knowledge before I make my next supra purchase. Are there any big differences, as far as horsepower capability and reliability between the W58, R154, and A340E? Any knowledge would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

the W58 is a smooth shifting transmission that came in the nonturbo 5speeds. Its nice for driving and in my opinion is quite a pleasure. MAXIMUM power it can handle is around 300-350 horse supposedly.

The R-154 is a bit more aggressive, and can take a serious beating. Can be very hard to get into reverse sometimes.. also a bit more effort involved in shifting, a bit more rugged.

The a340E is an automatic tranny which was used in turbo and non turbo applications i believe.. and is a very reliable transmission. Ive never had one fail, and i've been through 4 cars with them. This tranny is also great because it holds most boost between shifts and feels AMAZING while turbo'd.

I also have a question. I am thinking of doing a W58 swap into my 89 n/a auto or another 88 I might buy.

What parts will I need? So far this is all I can think of ( I'm an idiot, so feel free to add more)

5-speed ecu
W58 trans
Clutch master cylinder

What other parts will I need to complete my swap?

Youll need the hardlines of course, all the clutch pedal assembly(have fun putting that in)

and you will have to bypass your existing neutral safety switch.

also as far as i know you can use the Automatic ECU, but definately not the other way around.. you can use automatic ecu for 5spd conversion but not a auto on manual

How hard is it to put the clutch pedal assembly in? I wont be using the automatic ecu, 5-speed of course. How do I bypass the neutral safety switch?

the clutch pedal in my opinion is a BITCH to get to.. you surely have to take out the drivers seat to make it a bit easier..

once you get the seat out and get the pedal semi secured, its a bit easier as it goes.

as for the neutral safety switch, you will have to search it, i've only done it once but had dad do it, and i dont really know how so i dont want to look like an idiot by guessing.

yes, if you take the driver seat out, it will be much easier to get to all the pedals...we just did one, but the dash was out as well...took like 5 mins to unbolt everything.....

My AT trans out of my 87 is going bad, I found a GTE AT trans from a 91 for $80. The owner told me to check my year...what difference does it make for my year being different?

Should not be any difference. Only think i can think of is make some pigtails are different for the tranny sensors, but thats fairly easily overcome.

this thread http://www.supramania.com/forums/showthread.php?t=76198 may help you, just my thoughts and experiences with the 5 speed swap.
