I contact Rallispec, they are a distributer for the straight-cut gear sets for Subaru's and DSM's. I personally have driven a Subaru with one of their gear-sets and omg, it was incredible. In any case, I emailed them to see if it was possible to build our transmission up and this is the response I received.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

"We are a dealer for PPG so we can supply the Supra dog kits.

For the Supra models with 6-speed the dog kit price is $8415. For the “W-series” with 5-speed the full dog kit price is $7013 but there is also a 4-gear kit that retains the stock 5th gear for $5704.

I believe the 6-speed kit and also the 5-speed 4-gear kit are helical type gears so gear whine is kept to a minimum whereas, from what I can tell without actually contacting PPG, the 5-gear kit is a straight cut version. Generally speaking we have seen substantial reliability increases with the PPG sets in the Subaru and Mitsubishi transmissions we deal with on a day to day basis.

One thing to understand about the PPG helical gears is that they utilize a shallow angle helix cut with a tooth profile that PPG specially developed for maximum strength/efficiency. These two facts help to substantially increase the reliability over the high helix factory helical gears which tend to fail or wear prematurely when subjected to high torque levels (because the gear teeth separate and with the high helix the mesh becomes very poor).

Thanks.

Regards,

Dave

Thought I would let you guys know what they said. Personally, I think it's way too much money. I would rather put a Getrag Stock 6-speed to my 1JZ for that price.

Subaru's and DSMs have Front Wheel Drive type transmissions so they are inherently weaker than the rwd transmissions due to the space limitations. I have seen pictures of Subaru's gears that have been completely stripped. I have never seen a picture like that of the R154. You could get a mkIV transmission for that much money.

ummmmmmmmmm, no. subaru uses a RWD style trans w/the front halfshafts coming out the sides.

My bad. But still, its not like the r154 is nearly as crappy as the WRX transmission. STI is a different story. I just don't see the need for $6k gears in a car with a good transmission.

the biggest prob with subaru trans is the physical transfer case, known problem for years, I get alot of claims based on this personally.

My friend and I installed a dog box in his street driven WRX, there is a pretty decent whine to it (sounds like he has supercharger, quite funny actually) and no streetability problems. No too tough, not too loud, and he can beat on it non-stop and drop the clutch in big and this thing just keeps chugging away.

Hope he doesn't drive far... or is very good at rev matching. Because he'll be rebuilding that thing more then he wants to. LOL.
