hey guys,

so my valves are pretty loud, i tried doing all my shims but i wasnt really successful.
this may be a stupid question but i was wondering, if i pull off shims and camshafts off from a motor thats known to be good and quiet,
can i possibly drop that into my motor? putting the shims back to their spots that they were taken off.
if theres more to it than just shims and camshafts please let me know.
all input is appreciated.

iv never considered doing that because all engines wear and break in differently, when iv built motors i never use used parts. have you taken a micrometer to your cam and journals to see if they are even in spec before you considered putting used engine parts in,because your noisy valves may not be valves!! eliminate all the variables just my 5 cents

i've switch a mint(for a 7m lol) set of shims, buckets, and cams i saved from a previous motor to the head im running on my truck when i built that motor. even had the clearances from when i tore that motor down. they all ended up being the same specs from when i pulled them years ago off another head. the bucket fit without any binding or trouble too. ive been put around 17k on this motor and its doing great! if you have a set thats in better shape and are in spec its worth a shot. it will most likely work just check them after the install ;)

edit: or you could try just the cams and shims. i have feeling it will work. the reason i did this was because the ones on my head were so out of wack i didn't even want to deal with that mess when had a good setup just chillin lol

What do you mean by " not really succesfull"? If you checked and changed them all properlly and still have your symptom then clearances are probably not the problem. If your not sure you did it properly use the TSRM and/or guides on this website and do it again. U can reuse shims from other heads, if they are the correct size needed for each individual location. There are some good guides on this website to help make those calculations.

I'm actually laughing out loud at the thread comments here.

The size of the correct shim depends on the head, valve, bucket, and cam. If you change any ONE of those, the shims are not necessarily the right size anymore.

Take a look at this picture:

That doesn't even show a bucket/shim system or the cam above.

You can't take a set of "good shims" or even a set of "good shims, cams and buckets" and swap them over to another engine and expect it to work well.

The shims need to be measured while in their actual engine with feeler gauges. You can easily figure out what size shim you should have and then go out and buy it. Piece of cake. :)

Having an actual Toyota valve tool makes the job 10000 times easier. I actually have an extra set of tools around somewhere. You can buy them online for about $40 shipped and it's well worth it.

^i agree.

It's easy.
You measure the clearances.
Then remove the shims and measure them.
Then you add the amount needed for that shim to be in spec to the thickness of the shim and that equals the thickness of the new shim needed.
When cams are back in do a final check of the clearance and your set.

Double agree.

However, if you measure and need a shim that is xx size and you have a used one that is xx size then by all means use it. Those things are so fucking hard it doesn't make sense. I've never seen a properly installed shim/bucket actually wear. All the cam really does is polish them, not wear them lol.

You can't just say oh these shims worked in this motor so I can drop them in where ever and they will work in my motor. Also, just because the ones you have in there now are making noise doesn't mean they are "bad" they are just not the correct size.

yeah i agree with you guys that he should narrow his problem down but i was just answering his question. its not that i think every motor that needs the valves adjusted you just swap in all new shims, cams, and buckets lol. on my 2j two valves are out of spec and im just gonna get the correct shims.

but yeah op more detail on how exactly you tried to shim them.

It might be simple, but for some reason I always go the wrong way on the first one. IDK why.
