Yep get a filter with the valve, might have accelerated the wear a little but shouldn't have hurt it too badly.

mine does this too! :sarcasm: im changing the oil this weekend.

you know before last oil change i had a wix filter and never noticed any rattle at start up. now that its colder and i have another filter (i forgot what the brand is, its whatever my friends shop keeps on hand) i notice a rattle that goes away immediately after start up. it lasts for maybe one second then stops.

Chuck, have you changed your filter and has it stopped the rattling?

hey sorry for not posting back i found out i have a puralator filter do these have a anti drainback valve?

If it's a regular Puralator filter, it does but it's crap. PureOne filters are much better. Wix or NAPA Gold (it's a Wix) are my favorite due to internal valve design...both the bypass and anti-drainback are superior. And, yes, if the pump has to fill the filter 1st you will get temporary oil starvation condition...I'd be more worried about the bearings though. Poor flow from thick oil (> 10W-30) can make it worse on a stock system.

It doesn't pay to use a cheap filter ;)

Definately big end bearings rattling with no oil on inniatial startup, my car does this with a genuine toyota filter.

There is a big thread on supraforums about this noise for 3-4secs on cold startup

I am using 10w40 mobil1 semi-synthetic oil, 10w40 seems to be the norm over here

The only Toyota OEM filters worth using are the Denso JP version...the ones made in Thailand (what you get in the US) are crap.

There are much better oils available in the UK than Mobil 1 too...Castrol Edge comes to mind. One of the 30W multigrades world be better for a motor with no mods to the oil system.

Based on what I've seen inside the Thailand filters, it would not surprise me....I do not use them. I am not as familiar with the 1JZ, but the oil-to-coolant circuit may also have something to do with it too. It's position is pretty high on the engine vs the 7M...what I don't know is how oil is directed to the cooler and does it have a provision to restrict draining. On the 7M, the stock cooler circuit is pressure based...even if the cooler drains, the motor has to hit ~40 psi for oil to flow to the cooler. At that point, the bearings are getting plenty of oil.
