I know you guys arent fans of this but since I have or can get all the parts massively cheap and have people chomping at the bit who know their shit figured I would start asking and looking into this.

I have access to an sbc. Now I would like to run a holley stealthram EFI manifold but im unsure as to how much clearance there is with an sbc under the hood of one of these cars. I would prefer to run this intake with a set of aluminum heads I can get so I do not destroy the handling of the car. Yes I know of all the custom work needed.

How much hood clearance does an mk3 have with an sbc under the hood? will only single planes fit? Or will or is there a lot of room for a tunnel ram type manifold?

Also all mk3s with sbc swaps seem to be auto. I know the W58 wouldnt hold up long. But are the T5/TKO/T56/T6060s etc etc too big to fit? I mean ive seen videos with people with the 700r4s fitting so I figured the Manuals shit fit fine yet I havent seen any of them.

I know at some point I will need to do the research to see what kind of signals go to the stock na gauges as I would like to look stock in the interior and keep the import look on the outside.

And to those that will bring it up. I did consider a 7mgte for a good long while and in all honesty a 1UZ was inconsideration till I realized its actually even more custom parts. Please keep the flaming to a minimum. Ive looked into all of the motorswaps available and only 2 were truly tempting. The SBC and the 1UZ.

So to each their own and if you have useful information that would be great.
Thanks.

Which engine are you interested in using?

Sorry accidently posted it before I was done.

In this order...

SBC
1UZ (or hell 2UZ or 3UZ)
7MGTE

Roomie has a 1JZ mk3 and its nice! But im looking for something different and have always been a domestic fan (though the body and interior are nicer than my 89 camaro or 89 Mustang were)

The car in question is an 88 NA Targa w58 LSD 4.30 car

I come from a land down under
SBC/weight
(LS series makes more sense)

1UZ/only +1 litre capacity
(may as well just turn the boost up on the 7M)

7MGTE/needs dedication to make reliable power
(you can't cut corners it WILL bite you)

Remember this is my opinion only and I'm sure many will disagree ;)

LS1 is a lot more money honestly. Plus a buddy has a set of worked over Twisted wedge aluminum heads for dirt cheap. So the SBC would weigh the same or very marginally less than the 7MGTE setup. The 1UZ is just to me an amazing swap but with the resources at hand a much more expensive swap than the SBC. The 7MGTE the way I would want to build it is much more expensive as well. I know there are those that will say it takes money to do it the right way. Well Im a domestic guy at heart and to me this the best of both worlds. The imports have a nice body and a nicer interior.

So the key question here though is dimensions. Is there room for a stealthram efi manifold? Is there room for a TKO transmission or even a T56? I know this requires a custom driveshaft but honestly thats cheap as I have access to an LS1 aluminum driveshaft for free that would only need to be sent out to a shop to be resized and refitted (about 80 bux) and balanced.

As far as any forced induction. Just going to have an Na V8 for a good long while. The plans are 400 sbc destroked to 377 compression around 10:1 and 235cc intake runners etc etc.... in other words a v8 thats not scared to rev

The TKO fits like a glove the T56 needs a bit of tunnel work.

Any photos of one in there? Was also thinking that depending on the transmission length and such this could be a good time to maybe set the engine back and lower in the car to help with handling as well.

Ummmm "fits like a glove" ;)

and NOT an OJ glove!

lol nice.

Well TKO is a fairly beefy transmission. Think I might need to try to find a 3.72 rear gear instead of the NA's stock 4.30. 1st gear would be damn near useless :biglaugh:

Will have to figure out which oil pressure sender to use to and figure out what needs to be done to get the tach to work with the sbc.

Motor and trans mounts are no big deal. lol just make them solid. then a 1 piece driveshaft. Handfuls of fittings to mate the toyota parts to the Generic Motors parts.

Yep seriously the TKO goes in like it was designed for the Mk3 chassis ;)

Personally I wouldn't use solids but that's just me.

1. Its easier
2. Ive been in several cars with them never really bothered me.
3. Im sure at the point that this thing goes into a motor swap its no longer a daily driver lol.

It would be amazing if the Stealth ram will clear the hood.
Would love to do a 377.

I use my car as a DD when it's running so it's really important to not detract from the Supra standard qualities :)

ie: Everything must work as good or better than stock.

What might be acceptable for a play car gets really annoying on a 1000 mile trip ;)

lol my supra for the most part runs daily. Depending on how much oil you keep in the trunk :biglaugh:

As for solid mounts and rattles. Eh drive faster or turn up the radio. Has always worked well for me :evil2:

LMAO @ Oil :)

See that there's the difference in my car I have to turn the radio down at cruise if I want to talk to a passenger the car is that quiet! (I'm old though so this plays a big part in how I mod these days)

same with mine...even with the sidepipes... its a nice tone.. and quiet when cruzing....

Im hoping not to be overly loud though the RSR I want is the one with the minimal bends thats pretty much a glorified race exhaust. Hell the Supra drones so badly now at 2k rpms that I have to downshift to talk to people... why the previous owner thought it was a good idea to put a watermelon launcher for a muffler on this car I will never know. But hell couldnt be much worse lol. But I want the car with a heart and soul of an american v8 but the personality be import. Not sure what the engine would be worth hp wise. But figure with a decent cam (xe280 or something) It should be in the 430-460hp range. If I can get that stealthram some lower gears and a good tune should average what the 7M NA does or maybe slightly better....
