waste of time? its known to handle 1200+whp while being drag raced, thats hardly a waste of time.

Sure. If you have 1200hp to put through it.

Otherwise, is one extra gear worth the 5grand to get one and put it into the mkIII chassis: regear the rear end, custom driveshaft, custom trans mount, screwing with the center console to make the new shifter location look reasonably nice... and then coughing up the money for a clutch to fit?

Sounds like alot of hassle if you aren't already outpacing the abilities of the R154.

It's a badass swap, no doubt... power to people who are doing it, it's a tough job. If it's worthwhile or not is questionable. Just gotta be sure the OP knows what he's getting into.

The V160/V161 6 speed getrag transmission costs way to much :aigo:
Toyota europe wants about 6000 euros for a new one...
I will consider on buying a used jdm V160 only when I go over 700 whp,
till then the Toyota R-154 trans does the job :icon_bigg

i just think there are better out there, especially for drag racing

I don't think that the getrag is a good choise for drag racing...
You must go through more gears and that costs time :sarcasm:
But it is one of the strongest 6 gear trans ever...and which I think
is more useable in street racing, cause with enough power you can
pull hard in any gear till the readline.Dragster cars are doing better
times using auto transmissions....
Instead the R-154 5 speed trans has longer gears, not to mention
5th gear is way to long :aigo: I am talking for my car with 3.73 diff.gearing,
which is the longest rear gear for the A70 Supra...but it pays off when doing
110 mph and still having 3rd gear (with a 2jz at 6800 rpm redline).
When I go single with an aftermarket ecu with a redline set at 8000 rpms
with bigger wheels (285-35/18' rear tires) I should go easily over 120 mph
in the 3rd gear of the R-154 :sarcasm::biglaugh:

I'm trying to figure out if I should wait until I break my r154 or sell it while it's still good and go with the 6spd. I don't really want to but I'm going over the 800rwhp mark so.

Not it's not. Turbo A cars had a 3.22. :)

There's been a couple threads about it on here already.

The R154 is worthless with a 3.22 rear gear :aigo:
It will take a long time and more than 600 whp to pull hard in almost
any gear...
And as I know turbo A had 270 hp...:sarcasm:,and an unmodified R154
trans.
But if the trans is modified to shorter gearing maybe something possitive
could be obtained from the 3.22 rear LSD gearing :icon_bigg

it all depends on your goals, sub 700whp the r154 is fine, but above that I think investing in the 6spd maybe the way to go. I'm just not sure the r154 will handle the abuse that well.
