I'm looking at buying an engine from a company outside of Toronto that gets all of their engines directly from Japan. Is there any real difference between a US import engine and a JDM engine, or are they essentially identical?

Thanks!

Even though this has been asked and answered many times ill just take moment to answer anyways.

The only difference between USDM and JDM that i know of is the Coolant Rail, Throttle Body, ECU, No EGR or EGR Cooler.

Other than that they are identical

So that would mean that I'd need the JDM ecu as well? Hmm, that's a pain. I'll have to make sure it's available.

Thanks for the heads-up!

No Problem

You can run a USDM ECU you just have to install the EGR Components.

Thermostat housing is minus a port for the BVSV because JDM's apparently didn't have the charcoal canister either. Because of this, the throttle body only has one vacuum port on the top instead of two.

I have a JDM 7mgte that I'm swapping into an 84 Toyota pickup. I had to run a USDM ecu. It does not idle correctly for some reason, could it be because I do not have the egr setup?

-Early JDM GTE's don't have oil squirters.
-Coolant hardline around block is the same for JDM and USDM on the early models, they're different for late (rubber cap of death on early models)
-Any number of small changes from year to year and if it's actually out of a supra or a not.

I would like to take this time to say that only JDM 7M-GTE's out of Soarers have different oil pressure senders. JDM Supras have the same sender as USDM.

Jeff

really? ive had 3 different jdm 7m's, one in each car (at various times), the oil pressure always had to be swapped out in order to get my gauge to function...

in my 89, I swapped in a JDM 7MGE, oil gauge didn't work, and then later on I swapped in a USDM 7MGTE, and it worked just like the day before the original swap. Then on my 86.5 once the JDM engine it came with went out, I swapped in a 91 7MGE and the oil pressure gauge started working again, so when I bought the 92 with a BHG, I swapped in a JDM engine and had the oil pressure senders swapped in order to avoid the same issues..

Also I'm sure the JDMs were all out of Cressidas...but now that I think about it, it may have been possible for Soarer 7Ms...

I don't know enough about it to give you an answer, but what I can tell you is that you will need the egr system if you're going to run a USDM ecu wether it's causing that problem or not. The ecu is taking into acount that some of the volume in the cylinders will be displaced by the recirculated exhaust when calculating how much fuel the engine needs, so that would be a problem if there isn't any being recirculated.

MK3 in Japan came with 1G-E, 1G-FE, 1G-GE, 1G-GTE, 7M-GTE and 1JZ-GTE.
MK3 outside Japan came with 7M-GE and 7M-GTE.

No need to use a 3.0L in Japan and get penalized for it when you can get the same power from the 2.0L 1G-GTE and not have to pay the 3.0L premium.
