well, the coils i have are old and tired. im wondering if anyone has used these coils to replace the stockers. i figure id use 7mge msd wires and then mount these on the firewall. these should have a better spark then new stock coils and are much cheaper. opinions? id prolly opt for the msd units myself.

Those should work just fine. The resistance is close to the stock coilpack so the ignitor probably will not have any problem with it. You try it, and if causes a ignitor failure, I will send you a replacement ignitor for free. I wanted to try out something similar but I did the 1j coil thing instead. I was eyeing these coils too: http://store.summitracing.com/partd...art=ACC-140016&autoview=sku&Ntk=KeywordSearch

well, i have an extra ignitor, so thats not a prob. like i said, ill prolly go for the msd's myself. itll be just over $100 for the set, which is about what 2jz coils go for and ive heard they break up at high rpm. these shouldnt. i wont get to try them for a while yet, but they are on the to do list.

well, the guy that did dual ignitors mentioned his ignition breaks up at high rpm's, and my new 7m will rev to 8k rpm's. going all out cams and all. so figured id grab these coils since the ls1 coils are so exspensive and would still require 2 ignitors.

Actually that was me, but the problem turned out to be a boost leak and poor engine grounds. Now im running 18-25 psi all the way to redline with no missing or power loss.

well, then if i can get some 2j coils i might go that route. but even if i cant the msd coils should be a nice upgrade to the stockers.

It would be cheaper and cleaner then stock, and with high quality aftermarket coils, maybe higher output then stock. IJ's setup is the hot ticket, but it costs a few more bucks.

I come from a land down under
After burning a piston on the dyno I drove it home 50 KM's with horrible blowby and 4>5 litres of oil in the intake/IC and it still ran and fired up fine!

I'd guess the MSD's could fire a plug in a cup of oil no problems at all!

But Aaron is right it was many $$$ to set up!

So my question is: Why upgrade coils? Has anyone actually established what the limits of the stock coils are?

well, on the new engine im building it will be fully balanaced, fully built and that includes cams. im planning to rev to a 8k rpm limit, and i want to be sure the coils are STRONG! i dont know if the stock coils will hold up, and rather then buy stock replacement coils new for $60 each, id rather buy the msd's for $45 each and have a hotter spark.
