My under hood insulations looks like crap and is fulling off, is it a bad thing to remove it, wille it cause any dmage to the hood paint and such.

Some say yes, but I'll say that I was running for a year and a half, even with missing heatshields, with no hood insulation and my paint was juuust fine.
im gonan take mien off soon. i looked thorugh it and there didnt seem to be anycomplains on a bunch of celica alltrac guyswhen htye remove theirs soo..

What does it do absorb heat? It looks like household insulation inside so wouldnt it keep heat in the engine bay like home insulation keeps heat in a house? My only guess to its benefits is that it would keep the hood from flexing due to excess heat.

I dont think it so much absorbs heat, i think it produces more of a spreading action instead of the heat coming up and concentrating on one spot ( probably eventually have a heat spot on your hood above the turbo side)

I've heard all of the theories, but the fire smothering one is by far the best. The plastic clips attaching it to the hood would melt off in the event of a fire releasing the blanket onto the engine, and in doing so the fire would be smothered hopefully.

Yes it burns. I'll get a pic of mine if you want.:nono: My oil pressure rose on the freeway, and my plastic radiator top busted open when my water pump died. Oil leaked out of the bad valve cover gaskets onto a heat wrapped header. A small fire ensued which was doused with Gatorade. LOL. Stranded me in between Tucson and Phoenix in AZ. :cry:

Yeah... I agree, if it's in bad shape and dirty, take it off. I had a '67 Pontiac Catalina (Gunboat on Wheels), and the a/c pump froze while I was driving, friction caused the belt to burn, in turn setting the underhood insulation on fire. That definately resulted in bubbled paint...

Mine is just primer under the insulation. Kinda makes the whole 'my insulation looks like crap' debate a moot point.
Most under hood insulation on most cars is for sound dampning purposes - the over all sound output just as the muffler is----
