how can one tell if the harmonic balancer is still good? or can they even go bad....

i read a wiki article on them and I guess some can... but I dont know enough to tell if ours can.

quite simple really

look at the rubber portion. If it looks cracked and falling apart. That means that the entire rubber portion is cracked and brittle. In other words it is not dampening anything.

On a 87 supra. That will make the pulley 21 years and counting. Too old to be worth anything.

There's a rubber ring on the inside about an inch in from the outside edge. If it's dryrotted it will show. Hard to see with the fan shroud in place as you have to look on the front of the pully to see it.
