Diagnosing a rod knock is easy. If you start the engine and pull the plug wire on the injured cylinder, the sound goes away.

A loose front damper pulley makes the same sound. So does a loose flexplate on an automatic.

Pull the plug wire or the injectors clip ??

He was referring to bottom end power holding capacity, of which the 1J is every bit as stout as the 2J despite what folks may believe.

However, as a general statement I tend to agree, the overall potential is lower due to less displacement.

Correct, that's what I've been told, I was using a conservative number for a tad more reliability, I have a habit of overbuilding my engines.

Fair enough.. Honestly, I feel as though anything above 450-500whp cuts into reliability.

I will caveat that with the fact that I have been around 2Js that have put out 700whp+ daily for years with no issues (stock bottom end).. so, who knows what to believe.

Track racing would likely cause the reliability factor to become far more apparent due to abuse..

Agreed, I have seen people get lucky with over 700 hp on a stock bottom end and I've seen some puke above 300.

Exactly. Just because you make 700 HP on a dyno, doesn't mean you actually hit that every day when you use it as a daily. If you baby a car and keep boosting to a minimum, it will be every bit as reliable as a stock. Drive it like a racecar, fix it like a race car: often.

well, I wouldn't say that these owners keep boosting to a minimum as much as they are far more careful about pedaling into boost, not doing runs back to back, slam shifting, etc.

I agree though.. if one beats on them, even at lower power levels, the motors/cars are going to break more often.
