***THE FOLLOWING IS A LONG POST ABOUT A SERIOUS WIRING PROBLEM THAT I DESPERATELY NEED HELP WITH! IT'S ALSO VERY WORDY SO I APOLOGIZE BUT ITS NECESSARY!***

So I've got an 89 Turbo Supra, 5-speed (Just clarifying for harness/ECU type) that I've almost completed a 2JZ-GE-T using 7M ECU/Harness.

I'm being held back by one clip right now in the engine bay. It's a square type clip from the harness that plugs into a body harness in the glove compartment. I was told that this provides power to the ECU with this clip.

I bought another gray clip harness to do my wiring on because my original had definitely seen better days...

I was assured that as long as the harness was gray clip that there are no differences between them, however that is not the case. The O2 Sensor was a square type clip on this newly purchased harness (that i've already done all of the wiring on for this build) as well as a different type clip for a connector near the Fuse Box which I believe is C1. Not sure though. I swapped the other connector from my original harness to the new one to make it plug into the clip in the engine bay.

What are my options here? Buy another harness to do all of the work on again or hardwire the square harness inside the cabin? Or replace dash harness with a 91 harness?

Pictures:

Square type clip from the harness connecting to clip in the glove compartment:

This is the clip I took off of this new harness to wire in the one from the old:

Now here is the clip with the connector already wired in to work:

Thanks for looking. I desperately need help on this problem.

I ran into the same problem with my 1JZ swap. What I did is I got the wiring diagrams for both the 1JZ side, and the 7m side, and cut the connector off the 1JZ harness and repinned it to fit into the 7M plug, which would fit into the body harness plug.

Hope that makes sense. as for the one in the engine bay - not sure which plug that is... but whenever i ran into the issue of connectors not fitting, i did as stated above. Its a fair amount of reading and redoing, but I have had zero problems.

Isn't that using a 1JZ harness/ECU though? I believe this clip has different gauge wires on it as well. Could that still be a solution?

Thank you so much!

Oh oh I think i get it:

You're using a donor 7M harness, not one that came with the car originally? And you're not using the 2JZ Harness... correct?

If so, and you're sure that the two plugs don't fit, just get an opposite to one of the sides that'll work together, and repin it. With a lot of toyota's plugs, you don't have to cut any wires, just with a very small flat head screw driver and some patience, remove each pin, and insert it into it's correct spot in the new plug.

And I ran into some gauge differences as you mentioned - But the way I see it, if it's not a power supply wire [read: consult wiring diagrams!!], and the 7M side is a hair smaller, it must not be THAT critical. If you have any doubts, you can always run electrical draw tests on the circuit to see if you need to replace it.

Hope that's more along the lines of what you needed to hear ;)

ABSOLUTELY!

I'm attempting to find a pin out of that clip currently. But I've got work at 6:30 in the AM tomorrow... Tired. Lol. I'm in Body Electrical on the TSRM but I cant find it yet, and I'm worried its the wrong year for me to reference.

I appreciate your reply man.

Anyone else run into this problem before?

Thanks!

See thats what I've been using and I haven't come across it just yet.

What year is that TSRM for? I would need both correct? Engine harness pinout for a 91-92 and a body harness for an 89 correct?

Thanks!

IIRC, the wire colors should still be the same. What I ended up doing, because i wanted to be 100% sure, is I tested EACH wire in that plug to see exactly where it went, made an excel spreadsheet. For each wire i listed- color, gauge, plug pin, where it went (and that's plug pin), and then the same thing for the opposite end of the plug. Took a while, but in the end i have had zero problems. If you want i can see if i still have it, and send it to you.. see if it helps at all.

Man I would ABSOLUTELY appreciate that!

This is what I have from the original harness clip. I made my own pinout because I couldn't find it on the TEWD.

Clip From Old Harness:

5
1 12 16
2 6 9 13
3 7 10 14 17
4 8 11 15 18

1: Yellow/Blue (Red Dash)
2: Purple ***NO MATCH***
3: Black/Red {Thick Gauge}
4: Black ***NO MATCH***
5: Red/Yellow (Black Dash) ***NO MATCH***
6: Blue/Red
7: Yellow
8: Red ***NO MATCH***
9: Black/Orange {Thick Gauge}
10: Black/Blue {Thick Gauge}
11: Black/Blue (Red Dash) {Thick Gauge}
12: Grey
13: Light Green/Red (Red Dash)
14: Green [FOUND POSSIBLE MATCH WITH DASHES]
15: Red/White ***NO MATCH***
16: Black/Yellow (Red Dash) {Thick Gauge}
17: Red/Black
18: Black Yellow (Red Dash) [FOUND POSSIBLE MATCH WITHOUT DASHES]

I listed ***NO MATCH*** for ones that I could not find matches for on this 91-92 harness.

I listed {Thick Gauge} for ones with about gague 12.

This corresponds with:

http://www.cygnusx1.net/Supra/Library/TEWD/MK3/manual.aspx?S=Main&P=29

Which is a pinout numbering, not labeling. Because it corresponds with this I suppose that makes the TSRM an 89... Now if I could just find a 91-92...

This is what I've got so far. Should I just go ahead and repin with the ones that i know i have and ignore the rest?

Thanks!

-Nick-

EDIT: Found this page: http://www.cygnusx1.net/Supra/Library/TEWD/MK3/manual.aspx?S=Main&P=35

Which clearly states what year its for haha. Just thought that was funny.

EDIT 2: Just counted the wires in the clip on the 91-92 harness:

13 wires
15 slots total.
2 empty slots

EDIT 3: There are 13 available wires from the 91 harness and 13 definite matches from the 89 harness. Should I just match those up and call it a day?

I ran into this exact problem building my car. but I can't help much. I took the expensive easy way out, and just bought a different harness. It worked out good for me, because the first harness was my first ever experience with soldering wires. I had to cut my 550 clips and AFC-NEO harness.

Okay so basically I think this 91 didn't come with TEMS. Because the following are not included in the 91 harness:

2-Red/White
3-Red
4-Black
14-Purple

Also:

22-Red/Yellow is Headlamp even though they work right now...

Going to work now to see how it turns out!

is this what your car requires? sorry for the phone quality, all I got but I think it can be made out as to what it looks like.

Speed! Thank you so much for your help however now I have no signal at all to my dash. But the SAFC/ECU works just as it should :)

The car fired right up! (After priming of course)

I noticed on that Excel doc that there is a pinout of the gauge clip for our year. However there is no pinout for the 89 and this one, there aren't as many matches... :-( In the original pictures you can see the white rectangular clip coming from the engine harness and thats the clip that I'm assuming provides those signals.

Any ideas on this issue?

Thanks a million man I really appreciate it!

No problemo! You posted your question in detail, with accurate photos, and did research on your own. This board needs more of that! As for the dash, I remember I had to change some things over as well.....

But, being as its a 7M engine harness to a 7M body harness.... I'm not sure what to tell ya. Do the plugs fit? Do the wire colors match up pin-to-pin? I guess the first thing to check is if the engine harness side has ground (M1: pin 6). If that does, then make sure that the Tach wire (M1: pin 4) goes to the.... the.... I think on the 7M its the ignitor as well. Eitherway, make sure that's going to the correct place. Just work backwards, one wire at a time.

Well thanks man!

The clips do not match. The one on the Harness side is a wide white clip. The one on the body side is a smallter rectangle (M1) clip. Some wires match up however some of them dont.

Thanks i'll give that a shot today!
