Anyone ever tried to do something like this? Is it even possible? Something I've always wondered... to get a small 57mm turbo or even smaller for quick spool + a 78mm turbo or something to take over at 5000rpm. Can this be done???

Totally unrealistic and unuseable but...

Theoretically it is possible but I think the plumbing to make it function would be unworkable outside of an extremely overfunded college project with full access to a fully equipped engine dynocell.

Edit- can you hook me up with some of what you're smoking? :naughty:

I thought 3000gt VR-4's were like this. Or the Z32 TT's or something.

BMW has that new 5-series diesel that has a set up like that.

what would happen if you had a 1jz or 2jz twin turbo setup and put different sized turbos on each one?

The twin turbo vr4s and z32s both have similar sized parallel turbos dude. The only way this would work is twin sequential turbos, like on a 2jzgte or an rb25/26 det motor.
