Ok, long story short, I went to a big car meet last Wednesday night, everything was ok....on the ride home I noticed a small knock (you guessed it). So from seeing all the inevitable damage thats cause from the smallest knock, I have decided to go ahead and pull the motor for the rebuild I have been wanting to start anyways...I thought maybe it was low on oil, but it wasn't. So i'm thinking maybe something is up with the pump. As of now the motor is just waiting to be pulled. Just haven't had to time do it around work and school. But tomorrow it may happen. I have taken a few pics of the motor, while I was taking off most of the accessories.

Pictures of how it looked, after having it towed home. Basically just something to remember. Not that anyone would want to...lol :D

got the motor pulled last night.... pics in a few :D

Next plan is to get the tranny off the motor and the motor onto the stand.

The motor as it stood, right before the pull

p1558787_1.jpg

The shifter removed, so nothing gets broken

p1558787_2.jpg

All chained up ready to be removed :D

p1558787_3.jpg

Drive shaft removed

p1558787_4.jpg

And its in the air

p1558787_5.jpg

Motor mounts that needed replacing, I really don't know how m motor didn't drive away on its own with these things.

p1558787_6.jpg

Passenger side mount

p1558787_7.jpg

Caught up on the PS pump

p1558787_8.jpg

And the PS pump cleared....

p1558787_9.jpg

Step away and took a breather, cause the tail of the tranny had to be lifted next, so.....

p1558787_10.jpg

Myspace pic time :)

p1558787_11.jpg

Getting motivated to lift the beast

p1558787_12.jpg

And on the ground somehow lol

p1558787_13.jpg

So next step is to remove the tranny, and get the motor mounted on the stand, then it will be time to source and price a lot of things, also tear down the motor to send it in for head and block work....

Alright, so today and tonight was eventful.....

The tranny and motor were together waiting for me this morning when I woke up.

So I tried releasing the tranny from the motor...well it refused to let go.

After calling in some back up from a friend that just got his Supra back on the road after 3 years of building, and pulling on the ole TSRM....we figured it out, and the silly clutch fork, was holding strong like it should have. A small thing to overlook.

So tranny came off and was set aside. Well it was decided to go ahead and mount the trannyless motor to the engine stand. Come to find out the both sets of bolts I got with the stand either didn't fit the threads on the block, or weren't long enough to get a good grip on the block. Again, a small thing to overlook but it happens. So tomorrow before work, a little trip to a local hardware place will hopefully pay off, and i'll get the bolts that fit.

And now the pictures... :D

What I woke up to this morning :)

This morning was nice so I went out and felt like cleaning a bit..... I moved the fuse box, and surrounding electronics, and got to work with Purple power, a brush, and a toothbrush. I still have to figure what i'm going to do about the ABS...cause as far as I know it doesn't really work (being that I have front locked one time, in the rain) If anyone has some advice on how I should go about the ABS, please let me know. Here are some pics of the bay so far more will come :)

OK, so made some progress towards getting the head off...but the ARP's that are on there are giving me a hard time. So i'm going to look more into how to get those bad boys off.

Nice job but are you sure the motor mounts weren't causing the knock. I would bet money that they were making noise.

Meaning the motor was leaning and deprived of oil?

I don't think that was the case, cause the "knock" caused the car to stall when in neutral and just coasting. Meaning it wouldn't hold an idle I guess....ill find out more when the motor is opened.

I have been wanting to rebuild this motor, because I found out it wasn't a built bottom end when I was told it was...so I guess now is a good time.

Good work.
I've had trouble in the past, trying to get the ARP's out.
It's like they swelled up and I couldn't lift the head off them, so i had to remove them with the head.

Bad Motor mounts will cause problems and might even trip the knock sensors.

When something like this happens to me i try to do as much testing before having to go threw the trouble of pulling the engine or head.

Its something you wanted to do anyways tho so like i said before good luck.

True, well would it be a good idea to do this before I drop a ton of money into it?

1. Replace oil pump.
2. New motor mounts
3. New tranny mount
4. Reinstall engine
5. See what happens?

I would pull the pan and plastigauge the bearings and know for sure without any guess.

Get some powder free gloves and keep changing them so you dont get the bearings dirty. Cleanliness is everything when working with internals.

Edit: If there stock Toyota bearings and the clearances are good you could even swap them out with new Toyota select fit bearings and just leave rings alone.

Edit 2: If it was a tired old engine its possible that you got rod knock but as long as you havent had a bhg recently or went low on oil i dont see why you would unless it was beat on.

Im lazy so i try to avoid the worst if i can.

Yea i have read over and over again, a clean motor is a happy motor. So I have decided to not open the motor any further on my own, i'm going to wait to get it to a friends garage. SO it can sit in there for a while out of the weather. :D While it does, all i'm going to do now is save :)

Ok I got to taking my drive shaft off, and it dawned on me. Could my diff. cause this "rattling sound" I heard? Cause the oil pan is off, and it looks like theres no damage at all. Should I tear the diff out and see whats going on in there?

I guess this was a joke when the motor got swapped?

Well was the motor knocking while you weren't driving? Can you give us some history on the motor too? I see it has arp's and the upgraded hose in the oil pan.
Usually a dif won't give you a constant knocking, just a clunk when you accelerate/decelerate.

O and btw I think its time to change your sig...:biglaugh:

Ok well, when I bought the car, I was told it was a build bottom end, (upgraded crank was polished and balanced, pistons, rings, connecting rods, bearings, ARP everything... moving up.... MHG, minor head work. ARP head studs (which I still cant get off). Also I was told it was a upgraded turbo. Well as it turns out, turbo was stock, no head work (except for arp hardware, and MHG) nothing bottom end has been touch, and theres only a pretty SS line for the oil pump. Umm also, now that I have gotten the driver fender off, it looks like the car was in more then a fender bender (which is why I was told there was a black fender and headlight) due to the sub-frame looking like its slightly bent. Other then that I am planing on taking the diff. out tomorrow, and then opening it up. seeing what the damage in there is like. and then probably ordering new motor and trans mounts. (gotta love driftmotion :))

What do u mean by I should change my sig?

I have tried every type of socket to try and get these things off...and nothing will fit, does any one have any other options....?

Well you sig says "stop staring at your car and drive it"
I was just making fun of you because I'm sure you'll be staring at your car for a little while.

Oh, thats mainly for my Supra forums sig. Cause "MOST" (keyword "most") MK4 owners rarely drive there car...and do just that, they stare. But my car has a reason to not be moving (she has no heart jimmy!!!)

ANYWAYS :) small update...today being my day off, I wanted to finally remove my diff. and see whats going on in there. Well I got 2 of the bolts off, but the remaining ones refuse to come off. So while they were taking a WD-40 bath, I went to good ole' Home De-Pot, and Sears...and bought a few things I was hoping would fit, into the galleys to access the ARP bolts. (Pics will follow) Anyways, I got a socket that barely fits, BUT, I finally got them off. I'm so happy, but a little disappointed, cause its doesn't look like theres any damage to the MHG, which I was planning on there being. Not that thats whats disappointing lol, its the fact that I still don't know what cause my motor to act like I threw a rod. So untill my next day off, or if I find some time tomorrow before work, to take off my diff...ill see whats going on in there. Other then that, I am STILL at a loss, on what the problem was.

And now le photos :D

Tools of the trade... ( idk lol)
