You get worse mileage in the winter because colder air is more dense than hot, requiring more fuel burned per unit volume.
And because winter blend has more stabilizers etc, in it, to keep it from:
1) hard start issues when cold do to not enough volatility and
2) turning to crap or gel, although this is more common on Diesels

that is likely due to your altitude.

motor requires less octane with lower air density.

Yea, it's actually one of the biggest myths around here. Guys pull up to random meets all the time askin if anyone knows where "that station that has 93 octane" is at. Always love tellin em "about 250 miles east"

I pulled up to a 7 eleven today, brand new. And was shocked to see 95 octane gas. I didnt know that existed. But I put it in my car.

Wont hurt my car right? Before that I only put 93 oct in my car. So going higher wont hurt right?

In Australia we get 91 as our lowest then 95, and we have 98 as our high octane. Some places will stock 94, but that has entanol blended with it to make it cheaper then the 91.

I personally only run the 98 in my supra, everything else gets 91...
I pay $1.25ish a litre for 98 and $1.15ish for 91.

Spose you learn something new everyday, I didn't know you had a different rating system in the US.
Poodles post must have beaten me by a few seconds as it wasn't there when I posted.

Damn this thread is embarrassing. Come on man 87 octane? These are scenarios that make the MKIII crowd appear to be cheap and stupid. If you cant afford to play this game find another one..... Meaning sell your boosted car and get an naturally aspirated civic that way you can afford to fill it up with 87 octane and still be very safe while driving hard.

Shucks.. that is never good. I run 87 in my VR4, but I drive it slow and there is no knock. When summer comes I always add 93.

seriously...its like $4 more per tank...

edit: up here, its more than double the price of american premium and its still worth it to run it in my dd (better mileage with premium).
