Turbo Sound...why

This may sound like a dumb question but My buddy and I both have identical 1990 supra turbo's. We both have the same 3inch exhaust and the same stock c26 turbo's. My buddies car has a very aggressive hi pitched turbo spooling sound like a big diesel truck would have, and it sounds mean as hell!. Mine however does not have that sound at all?
Why is the deal with that? What could be the cause if we have identical setups? How can i get mine to sound like that too :biglaugh:

thanks again guys

well even though they are "identical" from a manufacturing standpoint. They are not.

Cars like any other product have a range that is "good". Hence if you look at the TSRM, they have ranges for bearing clearances etc. This is due to manufactuing tolerances.

Even though on the surface the cars look identical, one could have ideal compression while the other, still within spec, might be lower or HIGHER. way to many variables so I would not worry about it.

BTW if he has a high pitched "turbo" sound, more than likely he has an exhaust leak as it is not supposed to have a high pitched sound in our cars ;)

What about air filters and downpipes? I run 3in straight in front of the drivers rear tire with no muffler. Everyone thinks it's a dodge diesel. But when I close up the exhaust cut out and run through my flowmaster.... U can't hear the turbo at all, until I get on it and I can hear it.
And I don't know if the air filter will make adifference or not. My old SVT focus and some other cold air intakes I've had whistled. So it could be hearing it from the intake side??????

i have this super annoying whistle whenever i get on it with mine now... i thought it was a hole in the welding on the exhaust, as i had just installed a turndown tip right under the rear diff. but it didnt fix it...

and its only under high load/ full boost. and the faster you go// higher rpm = louder

^check at the elbow to the turbo and elbow to down pipe. i'm sure its a exhaust leak after the turbo that is as long as your not loosing boost.

When I switched from the stock DP +2.5"straight pipe to the BIC DDP with a 2.5" straight pipe my turbo now makes a lot more turbo noise at light throttle (like 1-2k rpm with light to heavy load). If you have a pretty open exhaust I think it is normal to have a lot more turbo "whistling" come out the tailpipe (kinda like a big diesel semi or dump truck). It sounds really awesome in a parking ramp :)
