Jon: Yep I freaked out a bit when I got my first BB Garrett a gt3040r rang them jump up and down and they assured me that's how they are..... (didn't seem right to me but maybe they float the bearing OD to allow for any imbalance)

As I said the 3540 and the 04z are both the same.

My BB T67 did the same, just a bit of play.

I worked in a Turbo Performance, manufacturing and rebuild company. We were dealers for Garrett, T-netics, IHI, Mitsu, Innovative and BW. The Garrett BB's and all have slight play brand new, if you put a bit of oil in it they get nice and tight. The Turbonetics do have more shaft play and there was a problem with the first hybred BB turbos years ago. I have seen may cars running them fine with no problems.

Now in saying that I would take a Garrett over a Turbonetics, there is a premum that Turbonetics seems the charge for there turbos and I see no reason to go that way.

If your turbo is in fact dead and you get your money back from them I would look very seriously at the BW (borg warner) turbo. There extended tip on some of there turbos is amazing for both the power and the spool. I have seen a BW S366 (66mm) gournal bearing turbo out spool and make more power than a T67 DBB.

A BW will be my next turbo.

Good luck with your turbo, it dose not look bad for a Turbonetics. Go over everything first, vac lines, manifold gaskets, waste gate. I have had stuff like this happen to me and its usally help to step back for a few days. Think it all over and come in with a fresh outlook.

Jeremy

helped me a lot i did just that i found a (very hard to get to) nut was loose as well as mis-sized vac lines on the bov (which explains the smoke off the turbo, compressor surge that i didnt hear until i boosted) i retightened and refitted all of the couplers i had as well and i think that mightve helped because some seemed not very tight

the price of the turbonetics was actually not that bad 800 or so for the setup +350 for the ball bearing and ive seen similar garretts just about 300 ish on top of it (for the dual option with water cooling).

its a fast spooling turbo thats for sure... i havent gotten to drive it much but in second gear i hit 1 bar at or a little before 3k rpm spool is instant

i like the turbo but i still might replace it later on with a larger unit, im sure this turbo would be perfect on a 1jz

Glad you got it all sorted out :icon_bigg BB turbos are awesome the first time you drive your car with them.

If you have any other problems let me know, maybe I will be able to help.
