turbo problems

wondering if i killed my turbo pretty much...

installed a new bb turbo, primed it and after 5 mins or so of sitting i take it around block. i felt it spool fine (did not boost just a quick pull to 3000rpm) then parked it until tonight. tonight i did the same but noticed a real lack of power... no boosting at all.

was thinking the turbo got no oil or it coked inside or something and burned off what was being fed into it~ in relation to that thinking the oil drain is restricted for some reason even though i installed it right.. going to check it tomorrow (if the drain is fine then im really stumped....)

now when i stopped both nights i noticed smoke coming off the turbo - but i assumed the first night it was just burning what little oil i spilled on it. but tonight i wasnt as sure as it was doing it again and it looks like it was leaking off the exhaust side... and makes a fluttering sound when accelerating

not sure if a vac leak is a problem because i just have a downpipe on and its too loud to tell.. but i did doublecheck most of the IC pipes and they were all tight and i couldnt yank any off with my hardest tug heh...

i took off the intake and started the car and the turbine spun fine and no play or anything... and when i turned it off it kept spinning and stopped after 10 sec or so
if anyone has something to throw at me let me know im kind of in denial about it atm heh

Edit: forgot to add this is on a aristo 2jzgte - but since its a pretty generic turbo question i put it here :)

it seemed the same as when i got it actually, little side to side thats all - if it were bad would there be excessive play? it was kind of hot i really need to check it again

forgot to add the vac didnt act normal either - i remember the vac goes to 0 when you accellerate and it did when sitting there but when you get it into gear it goes to about -10 and struggles to get higher... not sure if thats just a bad leak or what

Yeah, BB turbo doesn't have a center bearing in the middle of the shaft - it uses dual ball bearings instead.

As Jon said - zero side/side play.

i'll get a vid up tomorrow to mdc's suggestion

it is a turbonetics as well ive heard varying opinions about the quality of their bb compared to garrett's but who knows - i dont. (ive heard one side is bb while other is 360 )

ive heard that its normal to feel movement but of course not play - i just think its lack of experience on my part about the play since ive only felt the ct26's, a ebay turbo, and a former local shops turbo before and after its rebuild with garrett parts non bb and it doesnt feel similar to those

Sounds like your wastegate might be stuck open if your not pulling any boost at all but the turbine spins freely.

I come from a land down under
My brand new 3540r and my brand new T04z both had a bit of in/out/up/down play when I got em.

TLO: Big issue with BB Turbo's is they have a pair of 1mm restrictions just before the bearings so are easily blocked if there was any crap in the Oil Gallery or lines :(

Thats interesting Ian. ^
Every BB I have had come through here was tight, but spun very free.
Im thinking this turbo may be a Crapanetics hybrid.
In which case, it could very well have shaft play (its a journal brg on one end and ball on the other).
Tlo86, you need to check for boost leaks and check / video tape that turbo for us!

lines were brand new and pushed oil into them and through before i installed but not sure about galley

if it is half ballbearing half journal i will be very unhappy... i would take the hit for the return and just buy a garrett. but i'll get on it for the vid i ust woke up from last posting ;)

uploading them now - looking at them again the oil feed looks off center a bit and the drain has a 45 deg that is going horizontal before it hits the drain fitting on the pan (hard to snap a picture of that my lighting was blocked by junk )but its definitally getting oil and its definitally draining my video taking skills suck but you can see the play (and you can see a little scratch on the compressor inlet if you look at the bottom)

so im thinking that might be why its leaking oil (more than 15 deg more like 25 or 20)

p925889_1.jpg

looks off center
p925889_2.jpg

the 45 deg or so drain turning horizontal
p925889_3.jpg

off turbo

and you can prolly guess how the line is turning - somewhat to the side it might be an inch or two too long - movie is going to take a while to load

so it doesnt seem like turbonetics actually makes a dual ball bearing turbo just a single ball bearing and half journal and when asked about any reliability issues its a "not really" then when asked about garretts dual ball bearings they sidestep the question and throw a "10 years of " sales pitch

Jon: Yep I freaked out a bit when I got my first BB Garrett a gt3040r rang them jump up and down and they assured me that's how they are..... (didn't seem right to me but maybe they float the bearing OD to allow for any imbalance)

As I said the 3540 and the 04z are both the same.
