I just got my wifes car from the shop today. They've had it for almost five months. I don't even make it out of the parking lot and the check engine light comes on. I didn't care, I was taking it home. When I get on the highway I give it a little throttle and the boost gauge goes from negative to about .5 ..........It's the stock gauge and I know it doesn't read in decimals but you get the idea. When I took the car to them I checked the stock blow off valve by blowing through it. The manual said if you can blow through it then it's broke. Is this why I'm not building boost? I have already bought a turboxs blowoff valve and intend on installing it this weekend. Could their be another reason the turbo won't build boost, or do you think that this will fix it? Thanks a lot............lol:1zhelp:

Edit: The reason the shop had it was to install a new motor. I used the turbo off of my 91, so I know it works good, but the stock blow off valve on her 89 is shot.

If you can blow through the bypass valve, then that would be my best guess to why there is no boost. It could be another leak also in the IC pipes or a dying turbo. :dunno: Swap BOVs and see if it fixes it?

What code was tripped?

That's what I intend on doing tomorrow. I know the turbo is good, because I took it off of my car and then had one built for mine. I installed a Garrett to4e on my 91, but the turbo from my car ran great. Thanks Joel, and for IJ, I have already proof read this for spelling mistakes........lol

Sorry Joel, I didn't see the other question. I haven't checked it out about the codes. It was dark when I got it home. I will check tomorrow and find out. Hopefully it isn't anything too major. The car drove perfect coming home, except for the turbo/na thing.

If I were you, I would still go through the car and check everything due to my lack of trust of some mechanics.

You should have stopped right there when the engine light came on and made them figure it out and fix it or you should have atleast checked oil and coolant basics..

edit: no problem, let us know.. :)

I did check the oil and coolant before I started it. I didn't want them trying to fix it because it took them five months to install a stock motor. I did get a three year unlimited mileage warranty out of it, but their not going to touch it again unless the motor locks up in it. I'll check the codes later and report back with the verdict.

Good job! I am glad to hear that you checked fluids.. :) It would not be the first time I have seen mechanics forget to install the oil or coolant.. LOL..

haha. I had a bad bypass valve and I got 0 boost. I put my spare on there (tried blowing through it first and got nothing) slapped it on and pegged the gauge. I'd say your current problem is the bov.

I just installed my new blow off valve and it still doesn't seem to be spooling good. I did hear it discharge, but the gauge only read about one max. It never felt like it got a boost though. I mean the car never accelerated faster. I could just be used to driving mine. My car is a little faster than stock, so that could be it. The gauge should be reading correctly though, so it's not boosting more than one pound of boost. I'll go check the connections to the gauge and all vacuum lines now. Maybe the mechanics left a vacuum hose off or loose. I hope it's something simple like that....lol

wastegate maybe? Reach your hand underneath the turbo (WHEN THE MOTOR IS COLD) and see if you can wiggle that linkage for the wastegate. Try pulling the linkage towards the firewall is it easy to do? Does it move at all?

Ndboost, I'll go try it right now. The motor should be cool enough for me to try and move it. Even if it's hot, I'll just act like Chuck Norris and feel no pain....lol

Chuck Norris I am not. That thing is hotter than two hells. I grabbed hold of it a couple of times, but couldn't get it to move. I will let it cool off for a while and try it again later. Should I be able to move it back and forth?

as you said in your previous post about a boost leak. It could be an exhaust leak as well. Check your manifold & bolts etc.

Are you throwing any codes?

I'm throwing codes 34 and 71. 34 is Turbocharger Pressure, meaning the turbocharger pressure is abnormal. It also goes on to say that I should check the turbocharger(I just had it checked before I reinstalled it after hg rebuild one week ago) It also saids check the air flow meter. I have recently installed the lexus afm and it ran perfect before the ddp install. Next it saids to check the ECU, this is the one I dont know about. I have to search and find out what it is and what it does. I have a new intercooler from Bigaaron and I know it's in great shape. Sorry for the long posts.

the ECU is a highly unlikely issue. if it was the afm it would throw a different code i believe.

AFM has its own code (IIRC 31).. its more then likely either Fuel Cut related, or boost leak related.. I get the same code on mine and i know i dont have a boost leak. But it comes on after i hit Fuelcut 5 or 6 times..

So your getting the same codes on both cars? This is your wifes 89 car thread, and the other code 34,71 thread is your 91 car correct?

Maybe we should work on one car at a time here to avoid confusion...:)

Im just going to jump in here....

If the stock bov is broken, the car will still build boost, it will just be slow. This is due to the fact that the stock bov is re-routed back into the intake of the turbo making a closed loop system.

Now if the car seems slow (even slower than an NA car) then either the wastegate is stuck open, or the computer is in limp/safe mode because it detected a knock or another mechanical problem. Thus the computer has pulled timing and fuel and the car will be a lug machine of a monkey.

Reset the computer, put some fresh 93/94 octaine gas in it, and replace the bov.

Let us know!

Thanks everyone. I'll try these tomorrow since it's dark thirty here. And Joel, I apologize for the confusion about the two cars. This is all for my wifes car. It had a code52, which is a knock sensor signal. It has a new knock sensor on it, but doesn't our cars have two knock sensors? The other two codes 34 and 71 are from my 91 turbo. I'm more worried about mine and she is of course more worried about hers. I bet her's gets fixed first. My wife just informed me that she was logged in under her name and this may all seem strange, but I thought I was logged in under Suprahero. Great, more confusion.;)
