Tuning Question (How much more will a tune do for me)?

On a Mustang Dyno I made 248 RWHP and 290 TQ @ 15 psi @ 5000 rpm on the stock CT26 with the following mods:

- HKS Dragger exhaust
- 3" defcon downpipe
- high flow cat
- Lexus AFM
- 550 injectors
- Blitz ebc
- fjo wideband kit
- hks intake
- spearco intercooler with hardpipes

My AFR's were in the low 10's to mid 11's through hard acceleration through this run. I was wondering roughly how much more power I should realistically be able to squeeze out of this setup with a good tune using maybe a SAFC?

Also, what AFR's should I be seeing at WOT with these mods?

Thanks,

Mark

Okay, first off if your question is what will a tune do for you.....it will usually make more power for the money than any other modification out there as well as make your setup safe.

When I went to the dyno I came in with 319 rwhp and left with 378 rwhp and it cost me $120. Do the math, and what other modification will net you 60 rwhp for $120? NONE.

So, now youre wondering what A/F ratio to go with under boost....

I always stick with between 11.2 to 11.5 to be safe. Can you go leaner? YES, but the results arent worth the risk in my opinion. I see youre mods and I dont see anything to tune with....Do you have a SAFC or anything?

Also you should try to keep your A/F ratios on a flat line and not up and down. If youre gonna go with 11.3 then it needs to be that across the board.

I hope this helps....

Just for reference, my numbers and mods are in my sig. That was untuned.

Try tuning it and I bet you will see close to 400 to the wheels with that turbo as long as you have the fuel to support it.

What was the reasoning behind stopping at 5000 RPM?

Actually we ran the car up to 6200 but pretty much from 5000 up there was no gain in horsepower or torque.

That definitely helps. What are you using for tuning? I still have yet to decide on what I want to tune with.

Thanks Brandon

For what it's worth, I made 289rwhp, 295rwtq on a dead (shaft play-axial and radial) stock CT26 with chipped impeller blades at 15psi.

Mods were: Lexus AFM, BIC DDP, Clutchmasters stage 3 clutch, Fidanza lightweight flywheel, and an Aeromotive AFPR. Otherwise, everything was stock. I gained 25-30 (can't remember the exact figure) rwhp simply by dropping the fuel pressure a bit, as that was the only "tuning" device I had, and it was still safe when I was all said and done.

Yes I was running pig-rich before I brought the car to the dyno. They wanted me to drop fuel pressure more, but there was no way I was going lower. I can't wait to hit the dyno again with my new setup for Summer 2010. :)

So just a straight drop in fuel pressure using your AFPR, wow! So are you planning to add a tuning device or are you leaving it as is?

I was planning on installing an aeromotive afpr and a AFC-Neo at the same time.

You have a high rpm hold up. Strange with that downpipe. I wouldn't worry about tuning until you figure that out. Rich is safe. Do tune it, just make sure whatever is corking your system is figured out. 5000 RPM, might as well be a stock Windsor.

Today I picked up a SAFC II so I'm going to wire it up and make an appointment to have it tuned on the dyno. I'll post back with results.

After the SAFC, pickup a 57-trim CT26 down the road and you'll be able to hit 350-390hp but you'll likely need a fuel pump/line upgrade.

That's the plan so far, along with a walbro, afpr, mhg, arp studs and a new clutch. Is there a dual ball bearing option for the 57 trim CT26? I looked on Suprasport but it doesn't mention anything in the descrption about it being ball bearing. Also, is it even necessary to have dual BB on a CT26 upgrade or is the spool about as fast as it gets.

Thanks,

Mark

Yep, it was running very rich at first. I'm very, very far past that point now. I ran around on that setup, and later I wired in a MaftPro and did a bit of street tuning before I decided to pull the car off the road for a full restoration.

Since then, my direction has changed drastically, and the car will not see pavement again until I've got the capabilities for 550rwhp. (Through a new chassis, as my old one was rusting away in all the wrong places :()
