I agree a front strut bar is pointless, but is a rear strut bar also useless?

LOL, I try!

As for a rear strut bar, yep, we've got double wishbone front and rear suspension. There is little, if any lateral force generated by the movement of the suspension, unlike a Macdoodlewobbly (that term coined by IJ. LOL!) suspension, where it uses the strut tower as part of the setup. :)

(This is why you'll rarely ever see a an e36 M3 track car without front and rear strut bars, as it DOES make a difference on them.)

Good gosh!

What is one to believe after reading such conflicting points on whether front and/or rear strut bars are needed!!?!!

You believe the people who actually comprehend the physics involved in suspension systems. Or don't, and go pick up an automotive design textbook and figure it out for yourself.

(thanks to SR49 for the great pic)

Shock load/force is along the blue line as our cars are double A Arm suspension so there are minimal side loads/forces being transmitted to the shock towers.

"A" becomes a pivot point allowing the force to deflect along the red arc line.

Any "improvement" is likely to be the placebo effect, If the Bar had 2 or more bolts one above the other it would make much more sense or with some Triangulation back to the firewall but as is it's just a pretty Chi Chi.

If someone has a small enough camera do what one of the camaro guys did and place a camera under the hood while driving. You could actually watch some of the flex. The firewall flex has already had a video posted on here. On my camaro I had an edelbrock 3 point stb along with a front frame rail support (iroc wonder bar) and the thing squeaked a hell of a lot less and it was a ttop car. also was less likely in hard turns to want to twist with the ttops off (you could actually watch it without the bracing) You guys can think placebo but The supra did squeak less with the 2 point bar in place. Handling doesnt feel changed at all. But anything to make these things flex less wouldnt be a bad idea. lol dont believe me take off the targa and drive down the road while watching the A and B pillars. Thats a good amount of movement.

I disagree. I get far less targa wobble with the strut tower brace. Lets face it it these cars arent exactly the stiffest things around they flex almost any place you could think of. Additional bracing is a good idea. Though I will agrees sway bars are definitely needed!

I wouldn't know about a targa top, mine is slicktop. :p

so...has anybody actually strain gauged a strut bar to get a "real world" idea of what is going on? It is easy to base things on theory, but actual proof is nice.

with that said, if there is anybody local to me that wants to test this out, I'll be happy to....my car isn't quite up to the task yet.

Stiffening the front isn't going to do anything for the center of the car's flexing.

Also, you're comparing apples to oranges as it sounds like you had a 3rd gen f-body, and they use a mcpherson strut setup, not a double A-arm setup like ours.

I know they are completely different. But my point is how much difference it made throughout.

take a shoe box....

try to twist box...

remove lid of box...

twist box again...

tape a pencil to the front of the box...

twist and notice it does NOTHING.

Hell, the twisting action of your wrist in your arm is much the same, you're trying to brace the wrist to stop twisting when it's the two bones in your forearm that actually twist to rotate your hand (much like the frame rails).

As I already mentioned, the TRD bars don't have any hinges in them, so you may see SOME difference, but I really doubt it as the the top of the strut doesn't have any other forces except up/down.

One word, as already pointed out: MacNoodlewobbly (Thank you, IJ. LOL!) It's like comparing apples to a bulldozer.

HAHAHA. We don't ALL hate you. Maybe just a majority of the people you've banned, given infractions too, or bought rare parts from under their noses :sarcasm: They probably don't like you very much ;)
