If you can get it for cheap go for it. But I wouldn't do more than $150, throw him a price and walk away and give him your number. They ussually call.

Plus, you can ALWAYS go up.

what should i do about the oil? should i change the oil before cranking? how can i tell if its not just oil?

should i ask the owner to try and turn it over?

Change the oil... lol

Just check it and add until it's good. Again, I have never turned one over by hand or done anything besides check the oil.

Gotta get some balls and see what she's got before you can do anything else.

ima ask the owner to turn it over for me while i stand and watch. that way when the starter catches fire and cylinders 2 and 3 explode like grenades, and the alternator goes flying past my head i can say "nah, i think ill keep looking. thanks though!"

Then buy it!

I bought my white Soup for $200. Bet you can't guess why? Ding ding! Blown head gasket caused it to sit for two years! So I towed it home with my friends Neon and then fixed it. Only drove it for about three days, ironed out a few bugs and them drove it 1300 miles from OKC to LA. Now after a few more repairs have about $1200 in it - passed smog, gets about 21 mpg and drive it everyday.

It's a Toyota. You'll have a daily driver in no time.

Hook up a battery and get 3-5 gal fresh gas in a can. Hook up a good battery. If worried about it pull plugs and give a 2-3 second spray of wd-40 into cylinders. Dump in fuel, top off oil if needed and try to fire up. Find out what kind of running problems it has and make your list.

From pics I'd say right away to plan on at least this (with my half-ass guess prices):

Battery $60
fuel filter $15
air filter $15
tires $200-300
brake pads and turn rotors $100-150
seat covers $30-50
car wash $10
oil change $15
and maybe even a clutch $200-300

So that's about $445-700 to spend plus any other problems to be discovered as soon as your start driving it (loose suspension parts, bad switches...) plus the cost of the car.

That or buy a $1000 driver with half the hassle, and half the satisfaction of saving old Japanese metal with your own hands. Up to you.

thanks for the advice ratpick! i gotta see if a guy from snap-on is interested in it first before we can get a price on it. from the looks, i wouldnt really pay this guy any more than 100-175. course, itll probably bug the hell out of me til i go up to 300 or whatever he wants.

Just show up with $150 and a buddy. You have $100 and show it to him, he may sell it. Have your buddy say something like, 'I got $50, Let's get this over with already I got better things to do' and see if he'll do it.
